Principal Mobile Engineer - Payments & Cashier

Hard Rock DigitalUnited States, FL
Hybrid

About The Position

Hard Rock Digital is building a team focused on becoming the best online sportsbook, casino, and social gaming company in the world. We are seeking a Principal Mobile Engineer to own the frontend technical direction of the Payments & Cashier domain within our high-performance React Native app for iOS and Android. This role involves close collaboration with Product Management, Design, QA, Backend Engineering, and Compliance and Data partners to deliver a fast, trustworthy, and compliant cashier experience for millions of players. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you will set the strategic technical direction for Payments on mobile, multiply the engineers around you, and help shape the platform's future.

Requirements

  • 10+ years developing mobile applications (native and hybrid), with at least 7 years focused on React Native.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Deep expertise in React Native architecture using TypeScript in strict mode, with a track record of defining patterns and conventions adopted across engineering teams.
  • Mastery of dual state-management strategies — client state (MobX) and server state (TanStack React Query) — including the judgment to enforce clear boundaries between them at scale.
  • Hands-on experience building with AI — beyond usage. A demonstrated track record of using AI-assisted tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, Codex) as a core part of your daily workflow and of authoring agentic workflows and reusable AI skills/agents for a team — defining the conventions, guardrails, and evals that let others adopt them safely at scale.
  • Proven experience designing real-time mobile systems using RESTful services, WebSockets, and GraphQL, with an emphasis on resilience, latency, and graceful degradation.
  • Significant native iOS (Swift/Objective-C) and/or Android (Kotlin/Java) experience, particularly authoring and maintaining native module bridges and managing cross-boundary data flow — valuable for payment SDKs and secure native integrations.
  • Prior experience in payments/fintech, igaming, sportsbook, or online gaming, with a strong understanding of the regulatory, compliance, PCI, and geolocation constraints that shape product and architecture decisions — ideally including payment-provider integrations, deposit/withdrawal flows, and money-movement edge cases.
  • Experience architecting multi-variant mobile applications — divergent product configurations, jurisdiction-specific logic, and feature-flag-driven rollouts (e.g., LaunchDarkly) within a single codebase.
  • Ownership of cross-cutting technical initiatives such as design-system creation, legacy migration strategies, developer tooling, or CI/CD pipeline optimization for App Store and Play Store delivery.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the mobile development lifecycle — application architecture, OS-level APIs, debugging, performance profiling, security hardening, and deployment — with the ability to set org-wide standards in each area.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, scope, and drive multi-quarter architectural improvements, balancing long-term technical vision against near-term product delivery.
  • A track record of mentoring senior and staff engineers, elevating team capabilities through code-review culture, technical documentation, and architectural guidance.
  • Strong cross-functional influence — able to partner with Product, Design, QA, Backend, Compliance, and Data leadership to shape roadmaps and make build-vs-buy-vs-migrate decisions, and to communicate confidently with senior management.
  • A contagious and positive work ethic that raises the bar for engineering quality across the organization, not just the immediate team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience applying AI in a regulated or high-stakes domain is a strong plus.
  • Ideally including payment-provider integrations, deposit/withdrawal flows, and money-movement edge cases.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the frontend technical direction of the Payments & Cashier domain, owning architectural decisions for deposits, withdrawals, payment-option management, wallet/balance display, and transaction history, while ensuring alignment with the broader mobile platform.
  • Own the architecture and evolution of Cashier-domain features within a high-performance React Native application for iOS and Android, serving tens of thousands of daily users across multiple product variants and regulatory jurisdictions.
  • Partner with peer Principal Engineers in Core, Casino, and Sportsbook units and the Technical Director for Mobile to define, evolve, and uphold shared engineering standards, patterns, and conventions.
  • Champion AI-agentic development — building, not just adopting. Design, build, and maintain agentic AI workflows, custom agents, and reusable AI skills for the Payments mobile team; define the conventions, guardrails, and evaluations that make AI safe and effective in a money-movement context; integrate AI across the SDLC (requirements → implementation → review → release) and drive measurable gains in productivity, quality, and developer experience.
  • Drive multi-quarter technical initiatives — payment-provider integrations, legacy migration, platform modernization, design-system adoption, and build-infrastructure improvements — coordinating execution across units.
  • Navigate a highly regulated, money-movement domain — ensuring compliance, security, and stability (PCI-adjacent handling, geolocation, KYC and responsible-gaming touchpoints) while minimizing the architectural cost of jurisdiction-specific requirements.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex technical problems in the Cashier unit — leading troubleshooting, finding root causes quickly, and turning incidents into systemic improvements.
  • Champion comprehensive observability — analytics, error reporting, and performance monitoring for payment flows — and use data to drive architectural and product decisions.
  • Partner with Product, Design, QA, Backend, Compliance, and Data/Reporting to shape roadmaps, inform feasibility, and make build-vs-buy-vs-migrate decisions — including honoring data contracts so cashier changes don’t break downstream reporting or compliance.
  • Mentor and develop senior and staff engineers through architectural guidance, code-review culture, and hands-on pairing on complex problems.
  • Contribute to cross-unit technical forums, representing Payments engineering priorities and collaborating on platform-wide decisions.
  • Cultivate a positive engineering culture that values quality, pragmatism, and continuous improvement.

Benefits

  • Competitive pay and benefits
  • Flexible vacation allowance
  • A hybrid / remote working environment
  • Startup culture backed by a secure, global brand
