About The Position

Ulteig is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Principal Meter Engineer. This role serves as the firm's technical authority for revenue metering, leading the design, programming, installation, wiring verification, testing, troubleshooting, and certification of three phase revenue metering systems. The Principal Meter Engineer develops design drawings and specifications, applies ANSI, IEEE, and ISO/RTO metering requirements, resolves complex metering and settlement data issues, establishes the standards, procedures, and training that guide our metering practice, and supports proposal development and estimating while advising clients and mentoring engineers and technicians. As Ulteig's senior technical authority for metering, this role leads company-wide metering standards, advises the department on budget and quality best practices, and represents Ulteig's metering practice to clients and the broader industry.

Requirements

  • Recognized metering subject matter expert with a record of presenting, publishing, or committee participation (IEEE, ISO/RTO working groups, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency and working knowledge of revenue metering systems, with the capability to serve as the organization's metering subject matter expert.
  • Working knowledge of ANSI, IEEE, and NEC requirements applicable to revenue metering and instrument transformers.
  • Proficiency with meter configuration software from major manufacturers such as SEL, Schneider, GE, AMETEK, and others.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills, including the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines by setting priorities.
  • Ability to work well within a team in the office, meter shop, or in the field with co-workers and independently
  • Strong attention to detail, with ownership of work quality, the ability to coach others to produce quality work, and a commitment to integrity and excellence.
  • Able to read and trace AutoCAD engineering design drawings, including SLD, 3LD, logic diagrams, and DC schematics
  • Experience with Microsoft software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Copilot) and additional software knowledge depending on specialization.
  • Four-year technical degree with an engineering background
  • Ability to work permanently in the US required
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving standards required
  • Ability to travel nationwide to various project locations and for training (as needed)

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with CAISO, ERCOT, and other ISO/RTO manuals, protocols, guides, and similar documentation is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Industry committee membership and regular participation preferred
  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in revenue metering preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Delegate and oversee metering project work across multiple engineers and technicians, completing select high-complexity tasks personally while coaching others to lead client and project meetings
  • Serve as Client Team Lead for multiple metering clients, managing relationships and coordinating with SCADA, protection, and network disciplines.
  • Serve as the technical authority for revenue metering design, programming, testing, commissioning, certification, and troubleshooting, and establish company standards, procedures, and training materials for each.
  • Lead company-wide discussions on metering standards and apply owner design criteria across multiple clients
  • Develop technical scopes of work, labor and equipment estimates, and resource plans for proposals, project opportunities, and budget preparation, including review of assumptions, exclusions, risks, and engineering execution strategies.
  • Apply and interpret metering technical standards along with ISO and RTO metering requirements and tariffs when developing design documents and test procedures.
  • Create or modify existing SLD & 3LD, schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Design metering panels and oversee subcontractor assembly of panels
  • Approve quality checklists and test plans and champion continuous improvement of the metering practice
  • Prepare equipment and material purchase specifications and work with project management to select the proper metering equipment for each project application.
  • Program, install, test, troubleshoot, and certify revenue and check meters and various electronic data recorders.
  • Build standard meter programs for accurate revenue and real-time data, and develop complex programs for non-standard metering architectures requiring advanced loss compensation.
  • Verify wiring and meter accuracy on commercial and utility-scale revenue metering installations, investigate metering problems, make repairs, and advise customers on solutions.
  • Perform Factory Acceptance Testing of communication parameters and revenue data output of meters
  • Train engineers and technicians on meter application installation and maintenance, including CT and test switch wiring for transformer-rated systems, field testing with portable test kits, and discipline-specific software.
  • Establish and maintain schedules and provide timely progress reports
  • Work independently in the field while coordinating with the client
  • Advise the department on estimating, budgeting, and metering best practices
