About The Position

Raytheon is seeking an experienced Principal Structural Engineer for its Mechanical Analysis and Test Department, which supports structural and thermal design robustness across the company’s product portfolio. The role performs detailed structural analysis throughout program development and production, ranging from classical hand calculations to finite element analysis. Work involves difficult engineering problems requiring imaginative, thorough, practicable solutions aligned with organizational objectives. The position operates under general direction and calls for a high degree of technical competence, with expectations to serve as a recognized technical leader and/or lead teams of engineering analysts. The engineer defines the scope and level of analysis or testing needed to meet objectives, assists with program planning, and is accountable for individual and team work within agreed cost and schedule. The role includes presenting work for peer review, reviewing other engineers’ work, and engaging with internal personnel and programs as well as external government personnel and programs. The position is onsite in Tucson, Arizona, and requires an active, transferable U.S. government security clearance before the start date; U.S. citizenship is required.

  • Experience performing complex structural analysis using PATRAN, NASTRAN, ANSYS, or equivalent software.
  • Experience with dynamic, static, nonlinear, transient, or similar structural analyses.
  • Understanding of mechanical principles for classical structural analysis both inside and outside finite element tools.
  • Experience leading teams and strong interpersonal skills in a team environment.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively in a team-based environment and independently.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. government-issued security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required, and the clearance must be active and transferable before the start date.

  • Coordinate and lead technical peer reviews, ensuring work products are technically accurate, and review other engineers’ work products.
  • Present results to internal stakeholders and external customers.
  • Generate detailed archival technical reports.
  • Travel to test sites to support testing or design discussions, depending on work assignment.
  • Help define and develop Mechanical Analysis and Test department technical processes and tools, and lead teams to meet program milestones.
