About The Position

Waters Corporation is hiring a Principal Mechanical Engineer for its Research and Development organization in the Waters Materials Sciences Division. The role focuses on developing concepts for new materials-characterization measurement technologies and innovating the next generation of rheology products. The engineer will apply mechanical engineering expertise to support customer needs across WMS product lines and work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers. Through rapid prototyping and concept evaluation, the role helps close knowledge gaps, retire risks, and support priority new-product-development and research projects. The position collaborates across business functions to deliver solutions that address market and customer needs. In-person engagement is required, and applicants should be near the location to which they apply.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree at minimum.
  • 6–10 years of experience in research and development or a relevant environment.
  • Experience with prototype design, testing, and analysis.
  • Experience designing and implementing automation solutions and familiarity with using AI tools to accelerate development.
  • Experience with Design of Experiments and Root Cause Analysis methodologies.
  • Extensive 3D modeling experience; SolidWorks preferred.
  • PDM and change-process experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with GD&T.
  • Strong interpersonal and technical communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Organizational skills and ability to work on multiple projects.
  • Understanding of physics and mechanical engineering disciplines, including thermodynamics, structural mechanics, and fluid dynamics.
  • Experience designing for thermal and mechanical stress and reliability, transducer design and operation, and basic control principles.
  • Strong materials science knowledge and familiarity with testing principles and techniques.
  • Proficiency in statistical data analysis, technical presentations, and clear communication of results.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools for mechanical and thermal problems; Ansys and Matlab preferred.
  • Demonstrated Design for Manufacturing expertise and hands-on experience with fabrication or assembly techniques and working with machinists.
  • Must be near the location to which they apply because in-person engagement is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing materials-characterization and testing instrumentation products and systems.
  • SolidWorks experience.
  • Ansys or Matlab experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive and develop mechanical design concepts that meet customer and business requirements.
  • Rapidly prototype and evaluate concepts, identify risks early, and develop targeted test plans to mitigate risks and support efficient development cycles.
  • Propose and conduct simulations where relevant, and perform necessary calculations and justifications.
  • Clearly communicate status, results, conclusions, and next steps, including impacts and actionable plans.
  • Drive integration of mechanical, electronic, controls, and coding system components into prototypes to meet milestones.
  • Participate in and lead design reviews, providing feedback in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Work with product management leads on technical ideation strategies and solutions to maintain competitive advantage.
  • Communicate concerns, suggestions, and improvements related to engineering and the product life cycle.
  • Fully document mechanical designs, including bills of materials, drawings, and procedures.
