Axcelis is seeking a mechanical engineer to lead the design and development of highly mechanized and automated capital equipment for the semiconductor industry. Working closely with product and marketing managers, the engineer is responsible for developing innovative solutions to difficult engineering challenges facing ion implanters. Projects may include new product development, continuous improvement, part obsolescence, and field-identified issues. The engineer will champion sound engineering methods, analysis tools, DfX, and concurrent product development processes to deliver solutions right the first time. In addition to owning projects, the engineer will also guide less experienced engineers, knowing when to coach and when to delegate to elevate others on the team. The role requires close day-to-day interaction with both project managers and key customers to manage the complete mechanical engineering lifecycle for new and legacy products. Strong interpersonal skills are mandatory, together with a drive to succeed. Ensures mechanical designs meet design objectives as well as safety, industry (SEMI), and customer specific requirements. Executes design, qualification, and release of mechanical assemblies—experience with semiconductor capital equipment a plus. Troubleshoot, find root cause, and recommend corrective actions to system-level problems that cross multiple engineering disciplines. Having some knowledge of controls and electrical systems would be helpful.
