Principal Mechanical Engineer - Mechanism Design

RTXMarlborough, MA
$107,500 - $204,500Onsite

About The Position

The Radar Mechanical Design Department leads mechanical design, development, and integration of some of the most innovative land-based and shipboard radars in the world. This includes phased array radar systems, electronic modules, pedestals, and power and cooling systems. The department comprises individuals with technical expertise and experience in hardware design, integration, and production support. In this position, you will be responsible for developing technical solutions for a wide range of mechanism and machine design challenges, such as mechanical design of motion control actuation systems & subsystems, including custom actuator and geartrain design, kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanisms, design of machine elements, bearing design, selection and analysis. Responsibility extends across the entire life cycle of the product, from conceptualizing and design, to prototyping and manufacturing, integration and verification testing, through production support. You will be expected to apply sound first principles understanding to solve complex system problems while teaming with a cross-discipline team including electrical engineering, systems engineering, RADAR systems engineering, flight science, manufacturing engineering, supply chain and others.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience or an advanced degree in a related field and minimum 5 years experience.
  • Experience of mechanical design for military or aerospace or commercial applications.
  • Experience with any of the following: Development of different actuation drive systems, examples include power management, motor and/or gear train sizing and implementation (spur gear, ball screw, lead screw, etc.) or associated bearing configurations for optimization of friction and position accuracy, and/or load capacity or electromechanical control actuation systems or design experience mechanism synthesis and analysis.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with development of control actuator systems requirements, architecture, requirements risk, design and system performance.
  • Experience with feedback control systems, including sizing, testing and integration, design-for-manufacturing, kinematic and dynamic simulation and analysis.
  • Proficient in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5.
  • Proven ability to deconstruct higher level tasks into discrete lower-level work packages and tasks.
  • Proficient in generating free body diagrams.
  • Experience with CREO(Pro/E) or similar 3D solid modeling software.
  • Experience with ANSYS Mechanical or similar FEA modeling software.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills when working with team members and customers.
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Aerospace Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Develop technical solutions for a broad range of mechanism and machine design challenges supporting advanced radar systems and subsystems.
  • Design and analyze motion control actuation systems, including custom actuators, geartrains, bearings, and other mechanical machine elements.
  • Perform kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanisms, along with first-order structural, thermal, tolerance, and margin analyses.
  • Support the full mechanical design lifecycle, including requirements development, concept generation, trade studies, material selection, free-body diagram development, and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) application.
  • Create and support 3D models, engineering drawings, tolerance analyses, and manufacturing documentation required for hardware realization.
  • Partner with manufacturing and test teams to support prototype builds, tooling development, integration activities, and verification testing.
  • Participate in technical and design reviews while ensuring designs meet performance, quality, manufacturability, and reliability requirements.
  • Lead mechanical development efforts for radar systems and components while balancing technical performance, schedule, cost, and risk considerations.
  • Collaborate closely across multi-disciplinary engineering teams, suppliers, and program leadership to drive technical execution and resolve complex design challenges.
  • Provide technical leadership and sound engineering judgment while working with minimal oversight and significant latitude in determining technical approaches and solutions.
