About The Position

As a Principal Machine Learning Engineer, you will architect and lead the development of scalable, production-grade ML systems that address complex business challenges. This role requires designing robust ML architectures, driving innovation in advanced modeling techniques, and overseeing the full ML lifecycle from data sourcing to deployment and monitoring. You will provide technical leadership, mentor engineering teams, and collaborate cross-functionally to ensure alignment with platform strategies. Your expertise will advance Walmart’s ML capabilities, delivering impactful solutions that enhance operational efficiency and customer experiences. Our team develops and scales AI-driven pricing solutions that enable faster, smarter, and consistent pricing decisions across Walmart. We apply data science, machine learning, causal inference, and optimization techniques to deliver capabilities such as price recommendations, markdown optimization, price anomaly detection, and elasticity modeling. These efforts support Walmart’s Every Day Low Price commitment by enhancing pricing effectiveness and operational efficiency at scale. The team fosters innovation and collaboration to build robust, scalable machine learning systems that drive impactful business outcomes across the organization.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience architecting scalable, production-grade machine learning systems and platforms.
  • Proficiency in advanced ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, and languages including Python, SQL, and Java.
  • Strong expertise in end-to-end ML lifecycle management, including feature engineering, model training, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Deep knowledge of neural networks, deep learning, natural language processing, reinforcement learning, and time series analysis.
  • Proven ability to lead technical strategy, mentor engineers, and influence cross-functional collaboration.
  • Skilled in hyperparameter optimization, model validation, and MLOps best practices.
  • Excellent critical thinking and technical writing capabilities to communicate complex concepts clearly.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, AI systems or related area.
  • OR 7 years’ experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, AI systems or related area.
  • 2 years’ supervisory experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, AI systems or related area.
  • Prior work experience in accessibility best practices.
  • Prior work experience in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and guide scalable, production-grade machine learning systems integrated into customer-facing and operational products.
  • Translate complex business challenges into actionable technical strategies, platform requirements, and success metrics.
  • Lead end-to-end ML lifecycle execution, including data sourcing, feature engineering, model training, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Champion advanced MLOps practices such as CI/CD pipelines, model versioning, drift detection, and performance telemetry.
  • Drive innovation in applied ML, including deep learning, NLP, reinforcement learning, and multimodal modeling approaches.
  • Mentor engineers, influence architectural decisions, and promote engineering excellence across teams.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to align ML solutions with platform strategies and ensure sustainable scalability.
