Principal Infrastructure Architect

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc•Austin, TX

About The Position

AMD is seeking a Principal Infrastructure Architect to shape the next generation of infrastructure supporting its AMD Instinct environment, global labs, and data centers. This highly visible PMTS-level individual-contributor role contributes to an infrastructure modernization effort, moving traditionally managed lab environments toward scalable, automated, cloud-like infrastructure. The architect will partner with the primary architect and infrastructure leaders to define the architecture and drive it into implementation. The role helps establish how infrastructure services are designed, deployed, and scaled across AMD environments, spanning networking, virtualization, storage, observability, automation, bare-metal infrastructure, and Infrastructure as a Service. The successful candidate will influence long-term strategy, evaluate technologies and tools, develop implementation roadmaps, and work with teams deploying the architecture across sites. The position calls for someone who can combine strategic architectural thinking with the technical depth to guide implementation and technology decisions. The architect will collaborate across technical teams, build alignment, influence without direct authority, and communicate recommendations and realistic roadmaps to senior leadership. Austin, Texas is preferred; additional locations are San Jose, California; Seattle, Washington; and Toronto, Ontario. The role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Deep infrastructure architecture knowledge and the ability to turn architectural vision into execution.
  • Ability to operate strategically while maintaining sufficient technical depth to guide implementation and make informed technology decisions.
  • Strong planning, communication, collaboration, and technical leadership skills.
  • Ability to evaluate competing technologies, build alignment across technical teams, and influence without direct authority.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience architecting and implementing infrastructure in a hyperscaler, near-hyperscaler, neocloud, large-scale hosting, or comparable cloud infrastructure environment.
  • Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure architecture and experience taking architecture through implementation.
  • Strong networking knowledge, including segmented network environments.
  • Experience with hypervisors and virtualized compute infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise-scale storage architecture.
  • Experience with observability, monitoring, and infrastructure telemetry.
  • Experience designing or supporting Infrastructure as a Service and API-driven infrastructure.
  • Experience with automation, bare-metal infrastructure, and modern infrastructure management practices.
  • Experience developing technical roadmaps and driving architecture implementation across multiple teams or locations.
  • Ability to evaluate tools and technologies, understand trade-offs, and make recommendations based on technical and business requirements.
  • Experience communicating complex architecture and infrastructure strategy to senior or executive leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional technical teams and drive execution without direct authority.
  • GPU, AI data center, HPC, or similarly large-scale compute infrastructure experience.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with infrastructure leaders and architects to define and evolve the target-state architecture for AMD’s global lab and data center infrastructure.
  • Help transform traditionally managed lab and data center environments into scalable, highly automated, cloud-like infrastructure.
  • Translate architecture into actionable implementation roadmaps and drive execution across infrastructure teams and sites.
  • Evaluate infrastructure technologies, tools, and services and provide architectural direction around technology selection.
  • Provide architectural leadership across networking, hypervisors and virtualized compute, storage, observability, automation, bare-metal infrastructure, and Infrastructure as a Service.
  • Partner with managers and technical teams to establish priorities and guide implementation of architectural standards and designs.
  • Build alignment across the business and with senior leadership on infrastructure architecture, automation, security, customer-support needs, and long-term direction.
  • Help influence infrastructure technology and purchasing decisions needed to deliver the target architecture.
  • During initial onboarding, develop a strong understanding of AMD’s architecture goals, current infrastructure environment, data center landscape, and active deployments.
  • Begin driving architectural plans into delivery teams and identify sites and environments for implementation.
  • Establish a longer-term roadmap for scaling and implementing the architecture across AMD’s infrastructure environment.
