About The Position

The primary purpose of the Principal Informatics Pharmacist position is to assure the accuracy, integrity, and security of the Pharmacy System Database. Coordinates the implementation and testing efforts related to pharmacy information systems, such as, EPIC modules. Provides support and direction to pharmacy staff, monitors pharmacy system activity and assists and trains personnel in the utilization of the system. Provides highly qualified consultative expertise in the delivery of application level solutions for the Pharmacy Department and troubleshoots and monitors issues that arise. Will also serve as the subject matter expert in 340B regulations, medication acquisition workflows, and data integrity, while simultaneously supporting informatics functions withinthe Pharmacy Department.

Requirements

  • Registered Pharmacist in the State of NJ, with a minimum of three (3) years hospital Pharmacist experience, including work with Informatics and/or IST functions.
  • Strong computer and analytical/analysis skills.
  • Requires strong computer proficiency and knowledge of Microsoft based office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Ability to present complex systems and solutions in an understandable manner.
  • Requires knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations and procedures, clinical and automation systems.
  • Requires analytical skills to evaluate IT/IS based systems and trouble shoot problems with real time solutions.
  • Requires strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with the Hospital staff in making recommendations, assisting in resolving problems concerning IT & IS based systems.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and monitors Pharmacy Information Systems; regulates access to and ensures security of Pharmacy Information Systems and equipment; identifies, develops, and implements solutions to potential problems.
  • Leads and trains staff pharmacists and pharmacy technicians; provides high level information system technical support for Pharmacy staff; assists in daily coordination and scheduling of staff training, as well as ongoing review and monitoring of systems; provides input to annual performance evaluations for Pharmacy staff.
  • Serves as primary liaison between Pharmacy management and IST; participates in various committees, as necessary; oversees the implementation of various Pharmacy Informatics projects as assigned.
  • Coordinates implementation, testing, monitoring, and regulatory compliance of Inpatient and Specialty Retail Pharmacy Information System; coordinates and actively participates in the testing and implementation of new pharmacy systems, programs, interfaces and subsequent upgrades, as the Pharmacy Department expands its services.
  • Maintains Pharmacy Charge Description Master and Pharmacy Information Systems’ formularies; assures compliance with applicable regulatory, security and billing requirements; assures the integrity of the clinical content of the database is not compromised and is current and accurate; monitors compliance and software maintenance of the 340B federal drug pricing program, ensuring compliance with data integrity, mapping, auditing, validation, and all other aspects of the 340B program.
  • Assists in monitoring operations of the pharmacy system applications and identifies opportunities for increased operational efficiency and regulatory compliance and makes recommendations for improved quality and patient safety measures; researches and provides resolution of Patient Accounting issues as related to pharmacy charges; participates in pharmacy policy and procedure review and development; provides Pharmacy management with statistics and data from Pharmacy Information Systems through existing reports, or develops new reports as needed; analyzes and evaluates statistics relating to performance and use of system.
  • Maintains adequate back-up systems for department PCs; provides support during and following systems failures (downtime); responsible for intradepartmental communication by attendance at staff meetings and in-services and for knowing content of departmental staff meeting minutes and memos; maintains a working knowledge of the pharmacy policy and procedure manual; oversees the Computer Application Specialist assigned to his/her area to ensure all duties and responsibilities are carried out in a timely and accurate manner; ensures Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians are trained and evaluated on policies and procedures specific to their jobs; understands and adheres to University Hospital’s compliance standards and keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and University Hospital regulations, laws, and policies; performs other related duties as assigned.
