The Principal Engineer is responsible for owning technical design and understanding the tradeoffs in software products. As the Engineer, you will diagnose, document, and troubleshoot systems to resolve problems identified through testing, as well as implement strategies to improve integration and efficiency. The Principal Engineer will: Debug and solve product wide complex issues by translating business problems into technical solutions Master knowledge in major parts of the product line technology stack and maintains technical ownership of significant components of its code base Identify and solve systemic architectural problems at the subproduct or team level Collaborate across teams and build systems to address architectural gaps, and establish, contribute to, and drive best practices across teams Demonstrate sustained track record of creating improvements in subproducts or systems around stability, performance, and scalability Perform other related duties as required and assigned Demonstrate behaviors which are aligned with the organization’s desired culture and values A Typical Day The Pennymac Technology Team is building a new division to fundamentally change how we build software. We are creating an AI-powered platform designed to be a force multiplier for our entire Digital Technology Organization. Our mission is to build the next generation of intelligent developer tools that will accelerate our SDLC, automate tasks, and empower our product and engineering teams to deliver industry-leading mortgage technology faster than ever before. This is a small, tight-knit, and fast-moving team working to rapidly build and deploy new AI tools that directly serve our fellow engineers and product managers. We are looking for a passionate, hands-on technologist to be a foundational member of this team. The Opportunity As a Principal Frontend Engineer on the AI Platform Services team, you will be the architect of the platform's "face" and the guardian of the user experience. While the backend team builds the "brain" (RAG pipelines and autonomous agents), you will build the "Collaborative Canvas"—the interface where human ingenuity meets artificial intelligence. You will not just be building standard dashboards; you will be engineering complex, AI-native interfaces that rival commercial tools like Cursor and Linear. You will solve unique challenges in Generative UI, real-time state synchronization, and browser-based code editing. You will define how our engineers interact with autonomous agents, moving beyond simple "chatbots" to build a deeply integrated, multi-modal workspace that feels like a natural extension of the person's mind. This role requires a unique blend of elite frontend engineering, a deep understanding of developer tooling (IDEs, CI/CD interfaces), and a visionary approach to Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in the age of AI.
