About The Position

The Principal Flight Oversight Inspector (POI) oversees safety assurance and performs certification, surveillance, compliance, enforcement, and inspection duties for assigned air carriers, airmen, and designees. The POI ensures assigned organizations comply with Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) in operations, cabin, ground, cargo, and dispatch programs, and establishes inspection and surveillance work programs. The role applies advanced technical knowledge to promote regulatory compliance, identify hazards, and manage risk. As the principal representative for regulatory surveillance and risk management, the POI exercises full certificate authority over a major air carrier with extensive and complex operations, including large fleets of turbojet aircraft used for passenger and freight service. The position plans and carries out programs, projects, and studies; provides policy guidance to field-level Aviation Safety Inspectors on complex interpretations; and develops evaluation procedures when established precedents do not apply. The POI analyzes program requirements, adjusts work as needed, and makes decisions that can affect aircraft operations and the safety of the flying public. The position maintains communication with air-carrier officials, accountable executives, management, other government agencies, and civil aviation authorities to address certification, aircraft modification, safety management, and regulatory compliance issues. The POI informs front-line management of program and project status, advises office management, and prepares and coordinates technical and priority correspondence for leadership, industry, government agencies, Congress, and the public. Other duties may be assigned. This is a temporary position not to exceed two years; it may be extended, terminated, or made permanent without further competition. If it remains temporary, the selected employee returns to their original permanent position or an equivalent position in the same commuting area. The position is not virtual or remotely sited.
