About The Position

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases, has one immediate opening for a Principal Environmental Engineer. This is a multimedia environmental field support position responsible for coordinating environmental compliance activities for Air Products facilities and will be based in San Francisco, CA. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or science field – chemical engineering preferred.
  • Approximately, 5-7 years of environmental regulatory compliance knowledge and experience in all media, e.g. air, greenhouse gas (California), water, waste.
  • Title V air permit understanding/experience is required (experience with Bay Area Air Quality Management District rules and permitting processes is desired).
  • Experience must be proven at a minimum for Federal and California environmental programs.
  • Experience with defining and securing environmental permits, approvals and regulatory requirements for new facilities is desirable.
  • Experience with Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS).
  • Must be computer savvy using existing programs and systems and able to quickly learn and adapt to new ones. These include but are not limited to the Microsoft Office Suite (including significant Excel skills), Enablon EHS digital technology tool, SAP Compliance Management and Event Management tool, various regulatory agency systems for compliance/reporting including, but not limited to, CERS (SARA 311/312 or Tier II), SMARTS (Storm Water), TRI-ME Web/CDX (SARA 313), Cal-eGGRT/e-GGRT (CA/Federal GHG Reporting) and Various Local Air District Reporting Software/Portals.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills along with project management skills and a work process orientation.
  • Able to work in both field and office settings.
  • Able to travel to visit facilities as the need arises for compliance purposes.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree in environmental engineering desirable.
  • Training experience is desirable as presenting compliance requirements to facility personnel is a crucial element of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and improve programs across all environmental media (air/Greenhouse Gas/water/waste) to follow environmental regulations, permit requirements, and internal policies and standards for assigned facilities in California (approximately 4 plants).
  • Develop, maintain and improve environmental compliance tools, monitoring, sampling and testing programs to demonstrate compliance with regulatory and permit limits for assigned facilities.
  • Direct and train facility personnel in environmental compliance permit and regulatory requirements, including use of any tools for compliance.
  • Prepare and maintain waste profiles for assigned facilities and secure approvals from waste disposal vendors/facilities. Assist as needed with completion of manifests.
  • Prepare and submit environmental compliance reports to local, state, and federal agencies for assigned facilities.
  • Prepare and submit permit applications and conduct permit negotiations with regulatory agencies for assigned facilities.
  • Assist in conducting environmental regulatory assessments of plant and capital projects to define and secure environmental approvals. This includes developing environmental permitting strategies, preparing (or coordinating preparation) of applications, interaction with the customer and regulatory authorities as the need arises, and the creation of appropriate project documentation.
  • Monitor agency rule-making and analyze emerging regulations to settle impact on plant operations, existing permits, etc.
  • Sustain and improve compliance assurance tools and overall efficiency of compliance performance for assigned facilities.
  • Participate in company-wide work groups and improvement teams as assigned.
  • Provide project leadership with data-driven strategies and abilities to analyze requirements, identify trends, collaborate with stakeholders, and lead cross-functional teams to develop practical solutions that improve EHS performance.
  • Meet with regulatory agencies and internal company audit personnel during environmental audit/inspection visits to ensure compliance.
