Principal Engineer Systems (26-465)

Northrop Grumman•Huntsville, AL
•$108,800 - $163,200•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration is hiring a Principal Engineer Systems to join the Systems Engineering & Verification organization on the Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program. The position is based in Huntsville, Alabama, requires on-site work, and does not offer remote work or relocation assistance. The role supports a missile defense system used by U.S. leadership and combatant commanders to plan and control ballistic missile defense operations, monitor battles, and coordinate networked sensors and weapon systems. C2BMC also supports ground and flight tests that demonstrate current and future missile defense capabilities. The engineer will develop tools and visualizations, primarily with Java and Python, to analyze system performance; translate MATLAB tools into maintainable Java implementations; improve legacy software; conduct performance studies; and maintain the Jenkins/HTCondor automation platform. The role involves collaboration across systems engineering, software, and test teams, and communicating analysis results through reports and briefings. An active, in-scope Secret clearance is required at the time of application and to start. Travel is approximately 10%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field such as Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics, or a related field, and 5 years of experience; alternatively, a STEM-related master’s degree and 3 years of relevant experience, or a related PhD and 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Current, active, in-scope Government-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application; required to start.
  • Relevant applied software engineering experience with a demonstrated ability to deliver technical solutions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel, for documenting analysis, preparing technical reports, and creating briefing materials.
  • Ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary engineering environment and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Hands-on experience with one or more programming languages such as Java, C++, or Python.
  • Familiarity with database management, including working with datasets for analysis and performance assessment.
  • Understanding of networking or data communications concepts sufficient to support system-level performance analysis.
  • Ability to develop software tools and scripts that automate data processing, analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience with software engineering best practices, including version control, code reviews, unit testing, and documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a STEM-related field.
  • Experience producing tools and products for analysis or assessment of complex systems or projects, preferably using Java and Python.
  • Experience with DevOps or CI/CD tools, including Jenkins, HTCondor, GitLab, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with applying statistical distributions and methods in hypothesis testing.
  • Experience with model validation, inferential statistics, confidence-interval estimation, and goodness-of-fit testing and interpretation.
  • Experience performing systems engineering activities for DoD information systems, including requirements, verification/validation, or performance analysis.
  • Experience creating and briefing technical chart packages that summarize analysis methodology, tooling, and results for internal teams or customers.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Systems Engineer within the Systems Engineering & Verification organization on the C2BMC program.
  • Develop post-processing analysis tools and visualizations, primarily in Java and Python, to assess C2BMC system performance.
  • Translate existing MATLAB analysis tools into performant, maintainable Java implementations.
  • Write efficient, well-structured Java and Python code, and refactor legacy components to improve scalability, latency, reliability, and resource utilization.
  • Conduct detailed performance studies of C2BMC capabilities, generate actionable insights, and recommend architecture and algorithmic improvements.
  • Maintain and evolve the Jenkins/HTCondor automation platform, including creating, maintaining, and troubleshooting pipeline jobs, scripts, and plugins.
  • Collaborate with systems engineering, software, and test teams to understand system-of-systems performance and conduct high-level performance analysis.
  • Develop, document, and present analysis results in professional reports and briefings for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Stay current with Java and Python performance techniques, CI/CD tools, and database technologies, and recommend and implement improvements.
  • Perform other related duties as required to support program and customer objectives.
