About The Position

As a GE Vernova accelerator, GE Vernova Advanced Research is driving strategy and leads research & development efforts to execute on the business’s mission to help power the energy transition. We forge the collaborations and help invent the technologies required to electrify and decarbonize for a zero-carbon future. Representing virtually every major scientific and engineering discipline, our researchers are collaborating with GE Vernova’s businesses, the U.S. government, and more than 420 entities at the forefront of technology to execute on 150+ energy focused projects. Collectively, these research programs and initiatives aim to solve near term technical challenges, deliver next generation product advances, and drive long term breakthrough innovation to enable more affordable, reliable, sustainable, and secure energy. The Principal Engineer (PE) for Power Electronics will be responsible for spearheading research innovation, strategy, and technology transfer within renewable & power generation and conversion business units of GE Vernova. This role involves advancing business applications and new capabilities in the energy industry through the application of cutting-edge component technologies. The ideal candidate is a recognized leader in innovative and disruptive technologies poised to significantly impact the company. The PE will collaborate across disciplines to tackle complex technical challenges, lead major technology programs, and ensure technical execution across various projects and stakeholder groups. Additionally, the PE will be a vital part of the Digital & Electrical Systems leadership team at GE Vernova Research, contributing to technology roadmaps and supporting the Technology Director in strategic external engagements with agencies such as Department of Energy or DARPA.

Requirements

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field with a minimum of 10 years of experience developing power electronics and controls OR a Master’s degree with a minimum of 15 years of experience developing power electronics and controls.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Nice To Haves

  • Eligibility to obtain security clearance.
  • Experience designing, developing, and testing solid state transformers.
  • Familiarity with DC grid concepts, including medium and high voltage DC.
  • In-depth knowledge of power electronics and electric machines and their controls, including electromagnetics, insulation, thermal, and mechanical technology aspects.
  • Familiarity with energy storage
  • Familiarity with microgrids and grid integration of renewables
  • Connections in industry, academia, and national labs
  • Record of publications and patents in field of power electronics
  • Demonstrated experience in proposing and winning government contracts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including demonstrated formal writing and presentation experience.
  • Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance

Responsibilities

  • Conduct power electronics research through modeling, simulation, and design of power electronic circuits and controls.
  • Develop and test control solutions for power converter devices.
  • Participate with multi-disciplinary teams and lead GE Vernova Advanced Research teams in the development of new power technologies and capabilities for GE Vernova's next generation product platforms.
  • Innovate in the power electronics space and lead Intellectual Property development/reviews.
  • Effectively communicate results by preparing written reports and making presentations that describe analyses and solutions.
  • Connect the organization to the latest technological developments and trends in industry.
  • Contribute to proposals for GE Vernova businesses as well as government agencies such as DOE and DARPA.
