About The Position

UDR is seeking qualified candidates for a Principal Engineer- Mechanical HVAC Design Engineer opportunity for our customer in Aiken, SC to support the Savannah River Site. This role involves providing design engineering staff augmentation support, including engineering analysis, design development, and generation of design output documents. The position requires defining technical program scopes, developing quality solutions for complex challenges, and providing guidance to less senior professionals. The engineer will apply advanced technical practices, resolve complex problems, and provide leadership in finding new approaches and applications of engineering principles. Responsibilities include evaluating program results, preparing reports, identifying areas for technological improvement, and keeping informed of advancements in the field. The role also involves preparing plans, schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements, monitoring progress and expenditures, and reviewing work quality. Communication of results and objectives to customers, colleagues, and management, both verbally and in writing, is essential. There is also an opportunity to prepare reports for external publication and enhance expertise through local technical societies, demonstrating creative ability through patent disclosures, problem-solving, and technical writing.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in applicable science or engineering discipline and 5 plus years experience, OR a MS degree with 8 plus years’ experience; or BS and 10 years’ experience.
  • BS Degree in Mechanical, Chemical or Nuclear Engineering or current registration as a Professional Engineer in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering.
  • Candidate must demonstrate 10 years HVAC design experience in the nuclear or process chemical industry.
  • Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of NFPA 90A, 90B, 91, and 801; ASHRAE Fundamentals; ASME AG-1, 509 and 510; SMACNA; and ARI 410, 430 and 450.
  • Candidate must have the ability to walk down systems in the field.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidate demonstrates experience in 2D MicroStation Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD).
  • Previous SRNS design experience and familiarity with the processes and procedures for providing engineering support to SRS facilities is preferred.
  • Possession of an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide design engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS.
  • Perform engineering analysis, design development, and generation of design output documents.
  • Generate Process Flow; Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams; System Descriptions; Mechanical Equipment Lists; Mechanical Equipment Sizing; Pipe and Valve Specifications; Failure Analysis; Accident Analysis; Finite Element Analysis; ASME Code Design and Evaluation; Pipe Stress Analysis; Material Handling Design; Fire Protection Design; HVAC Design; and Vendor Document Reviews.
  • Define scope of technical programs and develop effective, quality solutions to challenges which involve unique or controversial problems.
  • Creatively meet all company and industry requirements and apply site systems to achieve quality, timely and cost-effective results.
  • Give quality guidance and assistance to less senior professionals on related tasks.
  • Apply technical experience in field of specialization or broad-based experience in multiple technical fields, to resolve complex problems.
  • Incorporate advanced technical practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.
  • Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise in a functional area(s) of technical expertise.
  • Provide direction and position responsibility both inside and outside department lines on programs seeking new approaches to problems and new application of existing engineering or scientific principles.
  • Evaluate the results of programs and prepares reports and recommendations based on these evaluations.
  • Identify and recommend improvements where established technology components and methodology are inadequate for solution.
  • Keep informed of the advancement of technology as applied through one's area of technology.
  • Prepare plans including schedules, budgets and personnel requirements for solving technical tasks identified by management.
  • Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor expenditures of budget and review quality of work performed.
  • Communicate results and objectives verbally and in manuscripts form to customers colleagues and management.
  • Occasionally prepare reports for external publication.
  • Enhance expertise in field through leadership in local technical societies.
  • Demonstrate creative ability through medium of patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers and articles.
  • Create/modify piping and instrumentation diagrams, system descriptions, mechanical equipment lists, integration with fire protection design, and vendor document reviews.
  • Perform calculations for equipment sizing, duct sizing, pressure drops, cooling tower sizing, heating and cooling loads, and air balancing.
