About The Position

Toyota’s Manufacturing IT Department is looking for a passionate and highly motivated IIoT Platform Engineer. The primary responsibility of this role is to develop, configure, and support the Industrial IoT platform that enables real-time data flow, application development, and digital solutions across TBMNC. Reporting to the IIoT Platform & Gemba Enablement manager, the person in this role will support the Manufacturing IT department's objective to enable team members to rapidly solve problems by providing a scalable and reliable IIoT platform. This position will be located at Toyota Motors Battery Plant in Liberty, NC. The selected candidate will be expected to reside within a commutable distance of this location.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering/technical field and/or 7 or more years of equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience in a professional environment
  • 5+ years building and operating backend services in Go, Python, or a comparable language
  • 5+ years with containerization and orchestration (Docker/Podman, Kubernetes)
  • 5+ years designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar)
  • 5+ years with PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or equivalent, including schema design and tuning
  • 5+ years designing and operating RESTful APIs and backend services
  • Hands-on infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible, Helm, or equivalent) and GitOps delivery
  • Production experience with observability tooling — metrics, logs, traces, and alerting
  • Linux systems administration, networking fundamentals, and TLS/PKI in practice
  • Secrets management and secure software supply chain practices — no credentials in code
  • Strong problem-solving using 5 Why analysis (or similar) and the ability to debug

Nice To Haves

  • Cloud platform experience (AWS preferred) and hybrid edge-to-cloud architectures
  • Experience building internal developer platforms or self-service tooling
  • Service mesh, ingress, or API gateway experience
  • Time-series or event-streaming data stores at scale
  • Performance profiling and capacity planning for high-throughput systems
  • TypeScript/React for platform-facing consoles and operational dashboards

Responsibilities

  • Own the internal platform as a product, including published interfaces, versioned releases, clear support models, and adoption metrics.
  • Build and operate the container platform, including multi-stage image builds, hardened non-root base images, a signed artifact registry, and promotion through local, QA, staging, and production environments.
  • Run production workloads on Kubernetes, including deployments, configuration and secrets management, resource limits, rollout strategies, and safe rollback procedures.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions, including test, lint, security scanning, build, signing, and deployment steps, with environment gates and automated rollback on failed health checks.
  • Define infrastructure as code so every environment is reproducible from source and manually configured servers are eliminated.
  • Create golden paths such as templates, scaffolds, and shared libraries so application teams can move from an empty repository to a running, observable, secure service with minimal friction.
  • Build backend services and APIs that support high-volume event streaming at scale, including backpressure, buffering, and store-and-forward capabilities for intermittently connected clients.
  • Design and maintain data contracts and schema standards, including versioning and backward compatibility rules.
  • Instrument the platform end to end with metrics, structured logs, traces, and alerts, and establish measurable SLOs for throughput, latency, and availability.
  • Own secrets and credential management, certificate lifecycle and rotation, image and dependency scanning, and least-privilege access across the platform.
  • Build ETL and data integration pipelines connecting internal services, enterprise systems, and cloud data stores.
  • Operate the platform through on-call support, incident response, blameless postmortems, and permanent fixes that prevent repeat issues.
  • Partner with engineering teams as internal customers to gather requirements, reduce friction, and publish documentation and runbooks.
  • Mentor engineers on platform practices and help guide technical decisions across projects.
  • Modernize legacy codebases and migrate them onto the supported platform.
