About The Position

EGS is seeking a Principal Engineer - Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Design Engineer to provide engineering design support for major nuclear and process facility projects at the Savannah River Site. This position is responsible for performing advanced I&C design engineering, developing engineering analyses, conducting field walkdowns, and preparing design output documents supporting modifications and upgrades to complex nuclear and process systems. The selected candidate will provide technical leadership while developing high-quality engineering solutions in accordance with SRNS engineering processes, DOE requirements, and industry standards. The successful candidate will possess extensive experience in I&C design engineering within the nuclear or process chemical industry, including process instrumentation, PLCs, distributed control systems (DCS), and MicroStation CADD design. This role requires strong analytical capabilities, field engineering experience, and the ability to lead complex engineering assignments from concept through design completion.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in an applicable engineering or scientific discipline with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Master's degree with 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor's degree must be in one of the following disciplines: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Instrumentation & Controls Engineering OR Current Professional Engineer (PE) registration in one of the above disciplines.
  • Minimum of 10 years of direct Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) design experience within the past 15 years in the nuclear or process chemical industry.
  • Experience designing process control instrumentation systems.
  • Experience designing PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems.
  • Experience designing Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
  • Proficiency using MicroStation 2D Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software.
  • Experience developing engineering drawings, specifications, and design documentation.
  • Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform routine field walkdowns in active construction and industrial environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Active DOE L or Q Clearance within the past two years.
  • Previous DOE or NNSA engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting nuclear facility modifications and capital projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
  • Experience supporting engineering design under DOE quality assurance requirements.
  • Experience with process instrumentation, nuclear facility upgrades, and control system modernization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop engineering designs for instrumentation and control systems supporting nuclear and process facilities.
  • Prepare engineering analyses and design calculations for I&C modifications and new installations.
  • Develop design output documents including: Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Control Logic Diagrams, Loop Diagrams, Instrument Indices, Setpoint Lists, Instrument Specifications, Control Valve Specifications, PLC and Distributed Control System (DCS) designs, Instrument installation details, Panel layouts.
  • Review vendor drawings and technical documentation for compliance with project requirements.
  • Perform complex engineering analyses and develop innovative technical solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineering personnel.
  • Define engineering scope, schedules, budgets, and technical requirements for assigned work.
  • Resolve complex engineering issues involving instrumentation, controls, and process systems.
  • Recommend improvements to engineering processes, technologies, and methodologies.
  • Conduct routine field walkdowns to verify existing plant conditions and support engineering design development.
  • Evaluate field conditions and identify design impacts, configuration issues, and constructability concerns.
  • Support construction organizations by resolving field engineering questions and providing technical guidance.
  • Coordinate engineering activities with operations, maintenance, construction, and project management personnel.
  • Develop engineering schedules and monitor project progress.
  • Support cost, schedule, and quality objectives throughout project execution.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables comply with SRNS engineering procedures and quality requirements.
  • Communicate technical findings and project status to management, project teams, and customers.
  • Prepare engineering reports, technical documentation, and recommendations.
  • Stay current with advancements in instrumentation, control systems, and engineering technologies.
  • Participate in technical societies and professional development activities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes and project execution.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.
