About The Position

UDR is seeking qualified candidates for a Principal Engineer- Electrical Design Engineer opportunity for our customer in Aiken, SC to support the Savannah River Site. This role involves defining the scope of technical programs, developing quality solutions to complex challenges, and providing technical guidance to less senior professionals. The Principal Engineer will apply advanced technical practices and incorporate complex features into problem-solving and program planning. They will provide leadership in determining solutions, be recognized as an expert in their functional area, and direct position responsibility both inside and outside department lines. The role includes evaluating program results, preparing reports, identifying improvements, and staying informed of technological advancements. Additionally, the position requires preparing plans with schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements, monitoring progress, expenditures, and work quality. Communication of results and objectives to customers, colleagues, and management is essential, with occasional preparation of reports for external publication. Enhancing expertise through leadership in local technical societies and demonstrating creativity through patent disclosures, problem-solving, and technical writing are also key aspects of the role. The position also provides design engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS, with primary responsibilities including engineering analysis, construction support, walkdowns, design development, and generation of various design output documents such as Single Line Drawings, Electrical Equipment Lists, Control System Design, Control Schematics and Connection Diagrams, Electrical Equipment Specifications, Bulk Material Specifications, Circuit/Raceway/Wiring/Connection Design, Grounding, Heat Tracing, Fire Detection, Short Circuit Calculations, Arc Flash Incident Energy Analysis, Load Flow Analysis, and Electrical System Sizing Calculations. Engineering services will be provided using SRNS processes and procedures, with programmatic guidance from SRNS.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in applicable science or engineering discipline and 5 plus years experience, OR a MS degree with 8 plus years’ experience; or BS and 10 years’ experience.
  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering or current registration as a Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering.
  • Candidate must demonstrate ten (10) years of design experience in the nuclear or chemical process industry.
  • Candidate must possess a working knowledge of NEC, IES, NFPA, IEEE, and OSHA requirements.
  • Candidate must have experience using software (preferably ETAP) to generate electrical system calculations.
  • Candidate must be able to perform field walk-downs of the job site for the engineering work being performed.
  • Field walk-downs may involve construction sites with uneven surfaces and work in progress, walking for distances over a half mile, climbing ladders to access remote areas, and dressing out in protective clothing.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous SRS Design Engineering or DOE facility experience and familiarity with the processes and procedures for providing engineering support to SRS facilities.
  • Possession of an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years is preferred.
  • Proficiency in using MicroStation 2D Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software.

  • Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise in a functional area(s) of technical expertise.
  • Provide direction and position responsibility both inside and outside department lines on programs seeking new approaches to problems and new application of existing engineering or scientific principles.
  • Evaluate the results of programs and prepares reports and recommendations based on these evaluations.
  • Identify and recommend improvements where established technology components and methodology are inadequate for solution.
  • Keep informed of the advancement of technology as applied through one's area of technology.
  • Prepare plans including schedules, budgets and personnel requirements for solving technical tasks identified by management.
  • Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor expenditures of budget and review quality of work performed.
  • Communicate results and objectives verbally and in manuscripts form to customers colleagues and management.
  • Occasionally prepare reports for external publication.
  • Enhance expertise in field through leadership in local technical societies.
  • Demonstrate creative ability through medium of patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers and articles.
  • Provide design engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS.
