Principal Electrical Engineer

Oracle•Burlington, MA
•$114,600 - $234,600•Onsite

About The Position

Oracle is seeking a Senior Power Engineer to design and support power solutions for server architectures throughout the product lifecycle, from concept and prototyping through qualification, production, and sustaining engineering. Products include AC/DC power supplies, battery backup units (BBUs), BBU shelves, and rack-mounted power distribution units (PDUs), with an emphasis on ORv3-based systems. The position is based in Burlington, Massachusetts, and is not remote. The engineer designs and integrates electrical subsystems that meet functional, performance, efficiency, security, and reliability requirements. Work includes component selection and qualification, schematic capture, FPGA design where applicable, and testing and validation of analog and digital power-control systems. The engineer also develops specifications, test plans, test reports, signal-integrity constraints, and bills of materials; investigates product issues; and collaborates across engineering teams to bring designs into production and support them over time. The successful candidate will have deep power-electronics experience, strong knowledge of analog and digital power control, clear technical communication skills, and familiarity with relevant industry standards, tools, and design practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 10 years of power-electronics experience, or a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 7 years of experience.
  • Strong understanding of switch-mode power supplies and rack-level battery backup systems.
  • Experience with I²C and PMBus communications and analog and digital PWM control architectures.
  • Proficiency with power-electronics lab equipment, including bench power supplies, AC sources, oscilloscopes, current probes, and high-voltage probes.
  • Working knowledge of C++ and Python.
  • Familiarity with applicable safety standards and global compliance requirements.
  • Clear communication of technical findings and decisions to engineers, stakeholders, vendors, and leadership.
  • Analytical judgment to investigate complex problems, document findings, recommend solutions, and escalate critical issues when needed.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams, listen to different perspectives, and align solutions with product and customer needs.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work across multiple projects, delegate effectively, and adapt execution as requirements, resources, or schedules change.
  • Ability to coach junior engineers, share technical knowledge, and seek feedback.
  • Ability to identify and implement practical improvements to engineering processes and workflows.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of network communications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and integration of power supplies, converters, battery backup units (BBUs), BBU shelves, and power distribution units (PDUs) for Oracle server and rack-level systems, translating system requirements into designs that meet performance, efficiency, reliability, cost, and schedule targets.
  • Bring up prototypes and lead hands-on lab characterization, testing, and debugging across operating loads and environmental conditions.
  • Develop test plans and validation methods to verify reliable operation and integration with Oracle server architectures, and build and maintain validation automation where appropriate.
  • Partner with firmware, software, diagnostics, and system engineering teams on power controls, monitoring, fault reporting, and system-level diagnostics.
  • Work with component suppliers and power-product vendors to define requirements, verify performance, resolve technical issues, and qualify designs and alternate sources.
  • Lead sustaining engineering investigations, including customer escalations, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and component end-of-life issues.
  • Prepare specifications, lead design reviews, and communicate technical trade-offs and results to cross-functional teams.
  • Apply power-conversion, safety, EMC, and environmental standards; lead pre-compliance activities and coordinate with test teams and external laboratories to support global certifications.
  • Mentor junior engineers and identify design, test, and process improvements for future power products.
  • Participate in interviews and provide hiring recommendations.
