About The Position

This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position requiring onsite days on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at either Essexville, Midland Service Center, Saginaw Service Center, or Bay City Service Center. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate, with relocation assistance available for qualified individuals. The Principal Electrical Engineer acts as a departmental subject matter expert, responsible for the engineering and design of large, complex projects supporting the sustainable operation of the organization’s distribution, generation, and storage systems. This role involves collaboration with engineers, technicians, cross-functional teams, and external stakeholders to deliver complex technical projects. The individual is a specialist in electrical utility systems, including product design, layout, and implementation. Specifically, this position is responsible for the operational performance of solar and battery generating plants at the Essexville Renewable Center, working closely with operations leadership and field technicians to troubleshoot and implement engineering solutions to meet safety and performance metrics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with seven (7) or more years of experience in electrical engineering
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with seven (7) or more years of experience in electrical engineering
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards related to electrical engineering.
  • Proficiency in design and calculation software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of electric utility operations, including generation, transmission, and distribution of three-phase alternating current power.

  • Knowledge of distribution planning principles is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with specifications, applicable codes, and customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, and testing activities.
  • Prepare reports and compile data related to existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies; provide technical support to other departments and personnel as needed.
  • Develop specifications for the procurement of electrical equipment and materials, and estimate material, labor, and construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products; serve as the primary point of contact for clients on all electrical engineering project matters. Manage the development and implementation of electrical systems.
  • Perform a wide range of engineering tasks using computer-assisted design (CAD) and other engineering software and tools.
  • Design, maintain, implement, and improve electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment, products, and systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic applications. Prepare contract documents, including specifications, drawings, and addenda.
  • Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and stakeholders to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects; monitor project progress and budgets, and prepare reports for senior management.
  • Ensure that installations and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical system specifications, technical drawings, and topographical maps; investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner.
  • Establish construction, manufacturing, or installation standards and specifications by performing detailed engineering calculations.
  • Oversee and manage the installation of electrical equipment and components.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
