About The Position

Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, serving 6.8 million residents across 68 Lower Peninsula counties. The Principal Electric Engineer is a departmental subject matter expert responsible for the engineering and design of large, complex projects for the sustainable operation of our distribution, generation, and storage systems. This role collaborates with a team of engineers and technicians, coordinating across the organization and with external stakeholders on complex technical projects within their area of expertise. They are specialists in electrical utility systems and products design, layout, and implementation. The Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) West Region Primary Engineer will be a key contributor to the I&C Engineering Division, helping the group meet its commitments to provide critical and quality engineering service to customers. The position reports directly to the I&C Engineering Division Lead. The Engineer will provide project lead and workload management/oversight for projects in the west region to support Capital and O&M projects ranging in scope from complete new electric substations down to single I&C device modifications and change-outs, and include smart/intelligent I&C devices on electric lines. The selected candidate will be responsible for matrix-assigned oversight of work by internal design engineering analysts and externally contracted projects producing designs for the projects in the primary engineer’s purview. Additionally, the Engineer will support and may spearhead efforts to improve division/section processes and meet common objectives. This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR Engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with 7 years of experience in an advanced electrical engineering capacity.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering.
  • Proficient in design and calculation software.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of three phase alternating current power).
  • Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset.

  • Prior automation experience (programming, power automate / PowerBI).
  • Prior Control or Substation Design experience.
  • Practiced skills utilizing CE Way tools to solve problems and eliminate waste.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering and design of large complex projects for the sustainable operation of our distribution, generation, and storage system.
  • Collaborating with a team of engineers and technicians and coordinating across the organization and external stakeholders on large complex technical projects.
  • Providing project lead and workload management/oversight for projects in the west region to support Capital and O&M projects.
  • Matrix-assigned oversight of work by internal design engineering analysts and externally contracted projects producing designs.
  • Supporting and potentially spearheading efforts to improve division/section processes and meet common objectives.
  • Utilizing the employee team for management of the section workload and identifying when additional resources may be required.
  • Contributing to staff decisions and discussions and helping to shape the future direction of the Division in technology, process, managerial and administrative areas.
  • Developing and responding to project scope documents, timelines, cost, and manpower estimates, and resolving potential issues.
  • Providing subject matter expertise and mentorship to design engineering analyst employees.
  • Leading and participating in internal and cross-functional problem-solving efforts and utilizing/instituting automation to remove waste.
  • Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities.
  • Writing reports and compiling data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies.
  • Providing technical support to other departments and personnel as needed.
  • Preparing specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials.
  • Estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Designing, controlling, and implementing electrical systems and products.
  • Serving as the primary point of contact with clients for all electrical engineering project matters.
  • Managing the development and implementation of electrical systems.
  • Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
  • Designing, maintaining, implementing, or improving electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes.
  • Preparing contract documents, including specifications, drawings, and addenda.
  • Collaborating with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects.
  • Monitoring project progress and budget, and preparing reports for upper management.
  • Ensuring that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps.
  • Investigating and resolving project issues in a timely manner.
  • Establishing construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations.
  • Overseeing and managing the installation of electrical equipment and components.
  • Performing other duties as assigned or may be necessary.
