About The Position

Kent is looking for a Principal Electrical Engineer to be based in their Deer Park, Texas office. This role reports to the Electrical and I&C Department Manager. The Principal Electrical Engineer will provide project discipline engineering support on project teams, ensuring successful project completion and objective achievement. This role is responsible for leading the Electrical team on assigned projects and communicating project status and concerns to clients and management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the design of Electrical distribution systems and designing voltages from 5kV to 138kV.
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.E.).
  • Good writing skills to produce reports, scope documents and presentation materials.
  • Knowledge of applying engineering application software like ETAP or SKM to perform relay coordination, load flow, short circuit, arc flash, harmonic and motor starting the analysis.
  • Knowledge of electrical design calculations.
  • Knowledge of Interfacing with DCS, SCADA, PLC etc.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Area Classification design and studies.
  • Knowledge of Substation Grounding study and Grounding Grid Layout.
  • Familiar with outdoor/indoor Substation Equipment layout.
  • Strong client focus; able to represent the company professionally when communicating with clients and visiting client sites.
  • Proven experience in successfully leading small to medium-size projects (budget of about 200 to 1000 man hrs.).
  • Experience in managing vendor electrical packages (substations, MCC buildings, Transformers, VFD etc.).
  • Works with minimal supervision, manages own time effectively and maintains control over all current projects/responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of domestic and international codes (NEC, IEEE, ANSI, API, NEMA, etc.) and Best Engineering Practices that apply to Electrical.
  • Quality management system and procedures.

  • Project Electrical Deliverables.

Nice To Haves

  • Fifteen (15) years or more of relevant experience in the refining, petrochemical, chemical process, or power generation industries is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Experience in the design of electrical distribution systems in a project team environment with a focus on 13.8kV to 5kV power distribution substations.
  • Prepare Electrical specifications and datasheets.
  • Develop load lists and equipment sizing.
  • Develop single line diagrams with relaying, protection and metering systems from low to high voltage.
  • Develop/Coordinate protective relay settings and coordination studies including Arc Flash.
  • Design and layout of electrical substations and prefabricated electrical buildings per NEC requirements.
  • Develop SCADA, Load Shedding, and other required systems for communication and control of the entire electrical system including generators.
  • Prepare electrical packages for quotation and purchasing following company standards.
  • Review vendor designs for compliance with Technical Specifications and applicable standards.
  • Prepare packages for code review and permitting by local/applicable authority having jurisdiction.
  • Establish the scope of work for projects/ proposals, developing engineering cost estimates and deliverable lists.
  • Provide Electrical BOMs and major equipment costs for capital cost estimates at various project stages.
  • Coach and support the team members on projects.
  • Monitor and update electrical manhours and schedule progress on assigned projects.
  • Attend project team meetings, Client meetings and vendor review meetings.
  • Establish a good working relationship with the Clients.
  • Review designs for constructability in accordance with project requirements.
  • Ability to attend Factory Acceptance Tests and Site Field Walks as required per project.
  • Ability to Perform power system studies with minimal supervision including but not limited to Load Flow, Short Circuit, Arc Flash, Relay Coordination, Ground Study, etc.
