Principal Designer & Product Manager

About The Position

This role is for a Principal Product Designer & PM who will decide what to build, design it themselves, and own the design system behind it. Reporting to the Head of Product, you’ll own how the company finds and keeps members across 16 states (and growing). This involves deciding on designs to help members make complex decisions, what to build or retire, and how these decisions impact the company's P&L and Trustpilot rating. Uniquely, while tackling nuanced product designs, you’ll also own the design system and tooling that Product uses. This means owning not just the product development, design, deployment, and iteration cycle for a specific feature, but also the design infrastructure behind it. The company believes that high-capability, high-ownership designers function as Product Managers in their own right, and that design infrastructure needs to live with its primary users in Product, not isolated from them. You will be responsible for making critical decisions within your first 90 days, such as addressing payment flow issues, creating new design patterns for quote screens with state-specific nuances, and responding to regulatory shifts that impact product economics. You will have thought partners across engineering, growth, risk, and insurance, but you will not be managed. You will form views on members and business economics by leveraging domain experts and conducting your own reviews. You are expected to have opinions, bring data, bring prototypes, and be willing to be wrong in public.
