About The Position

LG Energy Solution Vertech is seeking a highly motivated Principal Data Scientist to join its AI & Data Science team, focused on Battery Intelligence applications. The role drives research, design, and deployment of Battery State Estimation algorithms, applying advanced AI/ML and statistical techniques to battery data. It is a hands-on, high-impact position that influences the commercial value, availability, and performance of the company’s battery energy storage system fleet. The position is based in Boston, Massachusetts, with remote or hybrid arrangements considered. The Principal Data Scientist develops battery state-estimation algorithms from initial research and prototyping through production deployment, and helps ensure models are robust, scalable, and efficiently integrated into software and cloud-based data products. The role also serves as an AI/ML subject matter expert and leader, collaborating across functions and mentoring junior team members while contributing to the AI/Data Science team’s strategic roadmap.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • At least 10 years of relevant industry experience in AI/ML, data science, battery algorithms, or advanced state estimation, including demonstrated technical leadership of algorithm-development teams.
  • Strong hands-on Python development skills, including production-grade software development.
  • Deep understanding of supervised, semi-supervised, and unsupervised machine learning, deep learning algorithms, and statistical modeling.
  • Proficiency working with large-scale datasets using tools such as Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, and SQL.
  • Proficiency with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP, Databricks, or Snowflake.
  • Proficiency using Linux and Git for version control.
  • Proficiency with CI/CD pipelines and integrating ML models into DevOps workflows.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate across global teams.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Experience with BESS topology and Battery Management Systems (BMS).
  • Understanding of different Li-ion battery cell chemistries, such as NCM and LFP.
  • Ability to mentor junior team members and contribute to technical roadmap discussions.

Responsibilities

  • Drive end-to-end development of AI-driven battery state-estimation algorithms, including State of Energy, State of Charge, State of Power, and State of Health, from R&D and prototyping through production deployment.
  • Apply an understanding of BESS, from individual-cell physics to system-level topology.
  • Design, build, and deploy AI/ML state-estimation models to predict energy availability for BESS trading strategies.
  • Collaborate with product, energy market analysts, engineering, and DevOps to define requirements, integrate models into production pipelines, and deliver scalable, cloud-integrated data products.
  • Stay current with state-of-the-art Gen-AI, AI/ML, and deep learning techniques published in literature.
  • Lead the transition of AI/ML models from research to production, supporting robust, scalable, and efficient software development practices.
  • Serve as an AI/ML leader and mentor for junior team members and contribute to the AI/Data Science team’s strategic roadmap.
