About The Position

Wood Mackenzie is a global leader in analytics, insights, and proprietary data for the energy and natural resources landscape. With over 50 years of experience, the company guides decisions for influential energy producers, utilities, financial institutions, and governments. Wood Mackenzie is investing in a unified data platform to support its analyst and commercial teams across Power, Gas, and Oil. As part of this investment, a dedicated data ownership function is being established. The Principal Data Owner for Power Markets is the first hire into this function, responsible for the quality, meaning, and fitness-for-purpose of critical data assets. This role is hands-on and will involve defining data quality standards, mapping and cataloging data assets, and bridging the gap between engineering and research teams. The Power Market Intelligence team delivers daily forecasts and supports over 100 customer interactions daily with asset owners, traders, and energy retailers. The data owned by this role is crucial for the daily operations of these analysts.

Requirements

  • Deep knowledge of North American Power markets, including experience with multiple ISOs (e.g., ERCOT, CAISO, MISO, PJM, NYISO, ISO-NE, SPP).
  • Technical proficiency in SQL and Python at a working level to understand and investigate data pipelines.
  • A track record of owning data assets end-to-end, including accountability for quality, provenance, and documentation in a production environment.
  • Experience working at the boundary between research/domain expertise and engineering.
  • A bias toward action and ownership, with a drive to resolve ambiguity and build new processes and standards.
  • Comfortable in technical conversations and trusted by analysts to understand their data needs.

  • Experience across multiple ISOs (e.g. ERCOT, CAISO, MISO, PJM, NYISO, ISO-NE, SPP) is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Be the single point of contact for data quality issues in Power market data, providing definitive answers on dataset meaning, origin, and any issues.
  • Own the data quality bar for the Power lane of the data platform, defining and maintaining standards throughout the data pipeline.
  • Collaborate with analytics engineering to validate data transformations and document business logic for Power market data.
  • Map and catalog owned data assets, understanding data sources, transformations, and downstream use cases.
  • Write and maintain data catalog documentation to ensure assets are well-described, discoverable, and useful.
  • Bridge the gap between engineering and research/analyst teams, translating technical and domain language.
  • Ensure clear ownership and fast resolution of data issues by facilitating communication between teams.
  • Work with a globally distributed team, including a data operations team responsible for overnight pipeline monitoring.
