About The Position

Test Double is building a data practice and is looking for a Principal Data Consultant to lead the technical work at its center. This role is hands-on, involving leading data consulting on client engagements, mentoring consultants, and shaping the practice's offerings. Test Double is a 100% employee-owned, remote company with over 120 consultants across the US and Canada. The Principal Data Consultant will work alongside sales and solutions teams, focusing on delivery quality, technical credibility, and team capability growth. As the practice matures, this role will help shape its direction, lead complex engagements, and establish Test Double's reputation in the data space. The company uses AI to improve software and data platform design, building, and delivery, exercising judgment in its application to balance speed, quality, reliability, and maintainability. They produce work that meets a high bar, explain their approach, and adapt to evolving tools and practices, helping teams adopt AI effectively by shaping patterns, practices, and standards. The team culture supports clients in challenging situations, fosters engagement, and balances pragmatism with principled quality standards. They encourage team members, guide them to better solutions, and promote open and honest communication, fostering a culture of interconnectedness, supportive relationships, and trust.

Requirements

  • Software engineering roots: Must have built and maintained production software, not only data pipelines.
  • Depth across the modern data stack: Hands-on with dbt, Python, SQL, a major cloud warehouse (Snowflake, Databricks, or BigQuery), and orchestration (Dagster or Airflow).
  • Strong views on data testing and what good looks like.
  • A track record of growing other engineers, with concrete examples of developing engineers and consultants through feedback, coaching, and support.
  • Client consulting experience: Earned client trust through client-facing or consulting work, understanding how to navigate client organizations, influence stakeholders, and tie technical work to business outcomes.
  • Comfort building something new: Ability to work well through ambiguity and shape something with limited scaffolding.
  • Alignment with Test Double's values: Empathetic, humble, committed to continuous improvement, and works best in an inclusive environment.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical work on client data engagements, taking ownership of client data work across architecture, pipelines, analytics, and orchestration.
  • Apply a pragmatic, incremental approach to deliver the highest-leverage improvements first, helping clients establish scalable, observable, and durable data platforms and engineering practices.
  • Drive strategic transformation on the most challenging engagements, leading complex data initiatives such as modernizing data warehouses, guiding platform migrations, designing analytics and lakehouse platforms, consolidating data ecosystems, or establishing AI-ready foundations.
  • Set a high bar for trustworthy data by bringing clear, well-reasoned opinions on testing, reliability, and maintainability, ensuring data foundations hold up over time and clients can trust their AI and decisions.
  • Develop the next generation of data practitioners through structured coaching that elevates their technical capabilities and client relationship skills.
  • Help shape what the practice offers by identifying patterns across engagements and turning them into reusable tooling, processes, and documented service offerings, defining and evolving Test Double's data consulting practice.
  • Partner with clients as a strategic advisor, providing executive-level consulting to help them navigate digital transformation challenges and align technology initiatives with business objectives, influencing organizational change at scale while maintaining hands-on technical involvement.
  • Support revenue growth through authentic relationships, partnering with the demand generation team on sales calls, proposal development, and relationship building.
  • Expand Test Double's strategic market presence by establishing the company's reputation in the data space through content creation, conference presentations, and innovative tooling.
