Principal Core Infrastructure Engineer

Oracle•Nashville, TN
•$114,600 - $234,600

About The Position

Oracle is hiring a Principal Core Infrastructure Engineer to help design, build, operate, and grow its File Storage Service and related infrastructure. The role contributes to new features and tools, current service operations, and new AI/ML offerings and enhancements to existing storage services. It calls for expertise in distributed systems and software architecture, a focus on simplicity and scale, and comfort working in a collaborative, agile environment. The position involves software development, debugging, and application design, along with independent judgment and technical leadership. The engineer will participate in design activities, collaborate with Product Management on service definition, and establish operational best practices. The role leads development and begins architecting scalable, elastic distributed-system components; defines scalability requirements; optimizes code and data paths for high-throughput workloads; and uses data-plane platforms for large-scale retrieval, storage, and processing. It also covers fault tolerance, service reliability, telemetry, correctness, production troubleshooting, security and compliance, and infrastructure automation and change management. The role includes coordinating moderately complex work, collaborating across teams and with stakeholders, addressing technical problems, pursuing continuous learning and improvement, mentoring colleagues, and participating in candidate interviews. The U.S. hiring range is $114,600–$234,600 per year. The role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, and compensation deferral.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree, or equivalent experience relevant to the functional area.
  • At least 6 years of experience developing commercial software in a distributed environment.
  • Strong knowledge of at least one of Java, Go, Python, or C++.
  • Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and distributed-systems fundamentals.
  • Strong understanding of databases, storage, and persistent technologies.
  • Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and performance-tuning skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and begin architecting components of scalable distributed systems, including systems supporting horizontal and vertical scaling and distributed state management.
  • Define scalability requirements for owned components and ensure designs and implementations meet them.
  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and high-throughput workloads; use data-plane platforms for retrieval, storage, and processing.
  • Design systems for elasticity and create performance and load tests.
  • Design fault-tolerant systems that support in-service updates through redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Design for service disruptions such as network partitions and implement approaches such as load shedding, throttling, and rate limiting to handle network unreliability while meeting SLOs.
  • Define KPIs and telemetry, and build dashboards and alerts to monitor system health and identify issues.
  • Design and implement functional and correctness requirements, complex fault-injection and brownout test scenarios, and data replication and synchronization techniques.
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve production issues; mentor others in troubleshooting and incident response; and contribute to root-cause investigations and operational support rotations.
  • Design and implement strategies to prevent service interruptions and maintenance windows for customers, and ensure operational readiness of owned systems.
  • Implement security measures for multi-tenant environments, including encryption and access controls; remediate security gaps and maintain compliance documentation.
  • Develop automation scripts and tools, including IaC, to manage cloud infrastructure; create and follow change-management plans for patching, updates, and rollbacks.
  • Coordinate moderately complex tasks and projects, monitor timelines and deliverables, delegate and prioritize work, and adjust plans when resources or timelines change.
  • Collaborate across the organization and with business leaders, stakeholders, and customers to align expectations and meet needs; seek and listen to diverse perspectives.
  • Analyze information to address technical issues, escalate unresolved or critical problems with assessments and proposed solutions, and document problem-solving strategies.
  • Pursue learning and feedback, stay current with industry practices, and coach and mentor junior team members.
  • Recommend and collaborate on process improvements, solicit feedback, and evaluate effects on stakeholders.
  • Participate in candidate interviews, assess candidates, and provide hiring recommendations.
  • Participate in design activities, work with Product Management on service definition, and establish operational best practices.
