About The Position

Hard Rock Digital is building the world's best online sportsbook, casino, and social gaming company. We are seeking a Principal Backend Engineer to join our growing Casino Technology Team. This role is responsible for the continuous growth and support of our Casino and Sportsbook applications. The engineer will define technical direction across multiple teams and significantly influence the backend architecture. This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to shape the future of our platform.

Requirements

• Minimum of 10+ years of work experience
• Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor) in a daily workflow
• Genuine enthusiasm for how AI is changing software engineering
• Strong communication skills in English (both written and verbal)
• Experience working for a company with large volumes of traffic, where technical decisions must support a large customer base
• Deep understanding of AWS Cloud technologies and creating scalable multi-region applications
• Experience with Java and Spring / SpringBoot
• Experience with RDBMS (e.g., Postgresql, CockroachDB)
• Experience with Streaming technologies (Amazon Kinesis, Kafka)
• Experience with Message Queues (SQS, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ)
• Experience working within an agile development environment
• Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
• Experience with Micro-Service and Service-oriented architectures

Nice To Haves

• Experience in the Casino industry or an equivalent regulated industry such as Banking
• Experience championing the adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices (e.g., AI code generation, AI-assisted code review, agentic coding tools) within an engineering organization

Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction and architecture for complex, cross-team systems
• Contribute to the design and implementation of complex features
• Act as a mentor to Staff and Senior Engineers
• Serve as a trusted technical advisor for stakeholders like Engineering Managers, Technical VPs, and Product Managers, influencing roadmap and architectural decisions
• Write quality code and be passionate about technology, including AI-assisted tools
• Perform Code Reviews and coach Developers, Senior Engineers, and Staff Engineers on technical approaches
• Ensure the quality, scope, and timeliness of deliverables
• Champion the adoption of AI-assisted development practices and tools to improve engineering velocity and code quality
• Leverage modern tools, including AI, to multiply impact for yourself and surrounding teams
