Principal Backend Engineer (Live / Game)

MrBeastSan Francisco, CA

About The Position

Beast Industries is undertaking an AI-first engineering rebuild for a company with an existing audience of over 100 million people. This is a greenfield project without legacy constraints, focused on designing a real-time backend capable of handling creator-triggered traffic spikes and maintaining player engagement. The role involves owning the backend for live and real-time game experiences, where traffic is highly variable and can surge significantly during content drops or creator events. The system must remain stable and performant under these conditions. The engineer will define the standards for live-service backend infrastructure, design real-time systems (matchmaking, state sync, messaging, leaderboards, in-game economy), and establish reliability benchmarks including SLOs, capacity planning, incident response, and resilience patterns.

Requirements

  • AI-Native: Proficient in using AI coding agents daily.
  • Distributed-Systems Master: Typically 15+ years of experience building and operating backends at consumer scale.
  • Deep expertise in real-time or live-service architecture, including high concurrency, low latency, eventual consistency, horizontal scaling, and fault tolerance.
  • Battle-Tested at Scale: Experience owning backend architecture for systems serving large, spike-driven user bases and leading production incident response.
  • Direction-Setter: Proven ability to set technical direction adopted across multiple teams or titles.
  • Proficiency in backend languages and real-time technologies relevant to live game systems (Go, C++, Rust, Java, or equivalent).
  • Experience with relevant data/state stores.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct game backend experience (matchmaking, netcode-adjacent services, game state, in-game economies).
  • Experience operating through large unpredictable traffic events tied to media or creator moments.
  • Contributions to the broader engineering community.

Responsibilities

  • Define multi-year backend architecture direction for live game systems, balancing scalability, latency, cost, and reliability.
  • Serve as the principal technical advisor to engineering and product leadership on backend strategy and critical technology decisions.
  • Lead the design and review of high-concurrency, low-latency systems where correctness and performance are paramount.
  • Own the reliability strategy for spiky, event-driven systems and ensure adoption by other teams.
  • Drive the architecture review and RFC process to elevate backend engineering quality.
  • Solve complex distributed-systems problems that go beyond standard textbook patterns.
  • Mentor staff and senior engineers.
  • Represent the engineering practice externally through talks and writing.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity package designed for a foundational hire.
  • Hybrid Model: Expected ~3 days per week in-office (Bay Area or NYC).
  • Competitive Salary
  • Generous Medical (Blue Cross Blue Shield), Dental, Vision and company-paid Life Insurance
  • Company contributions to employee Health Savings Accounts (HSA)
  • 401k Plan with Safe Harbor company-matching
  • Flexible vacation policy and paid company holidays
  • Company-provided technology package
  • Relocation assistance where applicable, including travel and company-provided housing for the first 90 days.
