Principal Automation Engineer

TMX GroupToronto, ON
CA$130,000 - CA$145,000Hybrid

About The Position

As the Principal Automation Engineer, you will serve as the strategic lead for infrastructure automation across TMX Group, driving the transition toward a "Platform Engineering" model. You will define the enterprise roadmap for Infrastructure as Code (IaC), leveraging Ansible and Terraform to build standardized, self-service pipelines across hybrid-cloud environments (on-premise, AWS, and OpenShift). Beyond technical execution, you will provide architectural governance, establishing automated guardrails for security and compliance while eliminating manual bottlenecks in provisioning. In this evolution of the role, you will also spearhead the integration of Artificial Intelligence into the automation ecosystem. You will act as a high-level consultant to Global Technology Solutions (GTS), mentoring engineering teams and evangelizing a culture where AI-driven development enhances system reliability and autonomous operations. Your leadership will be pivotal in transforming fragmented infrastructure tasks into scalable, business-agnostic services, significantly improving organizational agility and reducing time-to-market for critical financial systems.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in Software Engineering and Infrastructure Automation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant job experience in computer science or engineering.
  • Deep expertise in self-hosted physical datacenters.
  • Mastery of RedHat Linux (8, 9, 10) and core fundamentals: PXE, DHCP, DNS, LDAP, LVM/XFS storage management, host-based firewall/SSH configuration, and low-level performance tuning in high-throughput, regulated environments.
  • Proven expertise in defining and executing large-scale Infrastructure as Code (IaC) strategies using Ansible Automation Platform and Terraform.
  • Expert knowledge of virtualization and container platforms, including OpenShift Container Platform/Virtualization and VMware.
  • Experience with OS deployment using RedHat Satellite.
  • Expert-level familiarity with on-premise storage technologies, including NetApp, PURE Storage, and container-native storage (Portworx).
  • Experience architecting and utilizing monitoring and logging platforms such as Splunk Observability/Cloud and Grafana.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python.
  • Hands-on experience leveraging Generative AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude) to automate complex infrastructure workflows and accelerate development.
  • Strong enterprise-level communication and leadership skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical strategies to executive stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with public cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS (Note: deep experience in self-hosted physical datacenters is prioritized for this role).
  • Familiarity with vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, Milvus) or MLOps practices.
  • Previous experience working within capital markets or a similarly regulated industry.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., RedHat, AWS, VMware).

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the enterprise strategy for Platform Engineering and IaC using Ansible Automation Platform and Terraform for both bare-metal and virtualized infrastructure (RedHat, OpenShift, VMware).
  • Lead the architecture and implementation of critical datacenter technologies, including network booting (PXE), identity (LDAP/DNS/DHCP), and high-performance storage solutions (NetApp, PURE, Portworx).
  • Establish architectural governance and automated compliance guardrails for security, ensuring all systems adhere to TMX’s standards for high availability within a regulated financial environment.
  • Spearhead the integration and adoption of Generative AI tools (e.g., Copilot/Claude) to augment engineering velocity, code development, and autonomous operations.
  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for low-level performance tuning, observability (Splunk/Grafana), and OS lifecycle management (RedHat Satellite).
  • Provide technical oversight and strategic direction to Systems and Automation Engineers, focusing on design reviews, solution consistency, and team-wide technical excellence.
  • Champion a collaborative engineering environment, actively mentoring team members in advanced IaC, Platform Engineering, and Generative AI practices to ensure continuous skill growth and team elevation.

Benefits

  • Generous time-off and leaves
  • Cloud-first and hybrid workstyle
