Principal Architect

Granum•Atlanta, GA

About The Position

Granum is seeking a Principal Architect to lead its Architecture team and guide the development of its technical roadmap. This is a hands-on player/coach role where you will lead a small team of architects and contribute to coding efforts. Reporting to the CTO, you will collaborate closely with leaders in Platforms, Product, and feature pods. The company's products are mature SaaS solutions used by landscape professionals. The role focuses on evolving the existing codebase towards a clean go-forward architecture without disrupting business operations. Key responsibilities include driving application and system architecture across the portfolio, developing platform upgrade tooling and processes (Angular, .NET, shared libraries), and reducing cross-team technical debt. The goal is to provide a stable, secure, and scalable foundation for feature teams, minimizing systemic friction and clarifying technical direction to enable rapid and confident value delivery. Granum is an AI-native engineering organization, and a crucial part of this role involves making the architecture understandable to both engineers and coding agents through clear patterns, context, and documentation. This position is for an individual with strong architectural opinions, who can adapt them to serve the team, and who values YAGNI, KISS, established technologies, and community solutions over custom builds, aiming for simplicity for development pods.

Requirements

  • A track record as a hands-on architect who has led the architecture of a non-trivial, production SaaS platform and evolved a real codebase.
  • Credible ability to read and write code; a leader who architects, not an architect who has stopped building.
  • Deep .NET experience, including modernizing legacy .NET Framework systems.
  • Systems and integration architecture expertise, understanding how applications and services fit together and how to evolve them safely.
  • API architecture knowledge, including exposure, security, versioning, and managing changes without breaking integrations.
  • A security-first instinct, reasoning about auth, access, and exposure by default.
  • Systems thinking and pragmatism, fighting complexity, defaulting to well-understood technology and community solutions.
  • Fluency with AI-assisted development, comfort with agentic coding tools, and understanding how to optimize codebase patterns for both engineers and agents.
  • Product and Customer Focus, working closely with product managers and tying technical decisions to customer outcomes.
  • Leadership experience, including setting direction, growing people, and running a healthy team rhythm.

Nice To Haves

  • Angular, Azure, and AWS experience.

Responsibilities

  • Turning Granum's architecture roadmap into sequenced, visible work, identifying cross-team dependencies during quarterly planning.
  • Establishing architectural standards, guardrails, and patterns for component building and integration.
  • Planning and coordinating major upgrades for Angular, .NET, and shared libraries, evaluating new technologies, and reducing cross-team technical debt.
  • Defining deployment patterns and providing shared CI/CD guidance to enable teams to own their deployments safely and consistently.
  • Ensuring application security, managing identity and access, and securing API exposure.
  • Defining the interaction model between humans and AI agents in the development process, ensuring the architecture supports agentic development.
  • Leading, growing, and setting the operating rhythm for the Architecture Pod, focusing on foundational work.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with multiple plan options (U.S.).
  • HSA/FSA accounts, disability and life insurance (U.S.).
  • Employer-funded HSA-based benefits plan with drug, dental, and mental health coverage (Canada).
