Principal AI Hardware Architect

EricssonAustin, TX
Onsite

About The Position

This role is for a Principal AI Hardware Architect who will own the technical contract between AI workload demands, software expression, and custom silicon delivery. The architect will translate AI workloads into concrete hardware requirements, lead hardware/software co-design, own performance models, validate real workloads, and provide strategic technical translation across different teams (hardware architects, AI researchers, infrastructure teams). This is a high-leverage engineering position focused on ensuring custom silicon is purpose-built for AI workloads.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of industry experience across AI, systems, or silicon
  • Proven experience at the intersection of hardware and intelligent compute systems
  • Hardware/software co-design leadership across full product cycles
  • Demonstrated performance modeling expertise — analytical, simulation, or cycle-approximate
  • Track record of influencing architectural and product decisions across multiple technical organizations
  • Exceptional written communication and technical specification ability
  • Strong Python and C++ skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with custom silicon, accelerators, or advanced hardware platforms
  • Prior involvement in ISA definition, memory hierarchy design, or accelerator roadmap decisions

Responsibilities

  • Translate real, modern AI workloads (LLMs, multimodal systems, signal processing pipelines, inference engines) into concrete hardware requirements including compute paths, memory movement, bandwidth ceilings, interconnect priorities, and specialized acceleration capabilities.
  • Lead hardware/software co-design by connecting model engineering, AI infrastructure, and silicon architecture teams to ensure hardware investments are architecturally sound and software-accessible.
  • Build and own analytical, simulation, and cycle-approximate performance models to guide compute investments, memory hierarchy decisions, and feature prioritization.
  • Profile real workloads on real and future platforms to identify bottlenecks in memory, compute, scheduling, and architecture, feeding these findings into the next hardware and software cycle.
  • Translate technical concepts across hardware architects, AI researchers, and infrastructure teams, grounding product decisions in real workloads, measurable constraints, and practical execution paths.
