Principal Additive Manufacturing Process Engineer

RTX•East Hartford, CT
•$107,500 - $204,500•Onsite

About The Position

The Principal Additive Manufacturing Process Engineer works within RTX’s Additive Manufacturing Process and Capability Center (AMPCC), which develops and deploys additive manufacturing tools and processes and supports the maturation of additive manufacturing technology and manufacturing readiness for RTX business units. The role supports commercial aerospace and defense product development through process expertise, technical data packages, process development, measurement tools, and cross-functional collaboration. The engineer may support RTX business units by developing additive manufacturing technical data packages for hardware demonstrators and IQ/OQ/MQ tools; design advanced measurement tools to characterize machine inputs and melt-pool or material responses; lead process development to improve print capability, speed, cost, and material performance; and develop tools to investigate process-structure-property relationships. The role also involves collaborating with government, industry, academic, and RTX partners on whitepapers, project concepts, and proposals; executing and overseeing development builds across a variety of additive manufacturing machines; working with multidisciplinary teams across the value stream; and communicating program results to upper management.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a university engineering degree or equivalent experience and at least 8 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in a related field and at least 5 years of experience.
  • At least 4 years of scripting experience with Matlab, Python, VBA, JavaScript, or similar.
  • At least 4 years of experience with CAD tools.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience operating manufacturing equipment.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and hands-on experience working with laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, collaborative team environment focused on innovation.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • U.S. citizenship is required because only U.S. citizens are eligible for the required security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government-issued security clearance; an active and existing DoD Secret clearance is required after day one.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Mechanical, Chemical, or Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • GPA of at least 3.5 is desirable.
  • Demonstrated expertise in metal LPBF additive manufacturing tools and processes.
  • Experience working in a production facility certified to AS9100 and/or NADCAP-accredited for additive manufacturing.
  • Experience using advanced additive manufacturing build processors to design custom LPBF tool paths.
  • Experience using statistical analysis software such as Minitab, Stat-Ease360, or similar.
