About The Position

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a compassionate and skilled Registered Nurse II to deliver high-quality care in our Ambulatory Care Center. In this leadership role, you'll assess, coordinate, and provide both primary and specialized nursing services, while supervising LPNs, NAs, and support staff. Responsibilities include performance improvement, regulatory compliance, and upholding nursing standards in a collaborative, patient-centered environment.

Requirements

  • Strong grasp of nursing theories, scientific principles, and clinical best practices.
  • Skilled in patient assessment, data collection, and care planning.
  • Compassionate communicator with the ability to empathize and connect across diverse populations.
  • Proficient in oral and written communication, documentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Physically and mentally resilient in high-stress environments.
  • Knowledgeable in emergency procedures (including CPR) and pharmacology.
  • Experienced in providing care to individuals with varied physical, emotional, and cognitive needs.
  • Culturally sensitive and respectful of patient rights and confidentiality.
  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • One year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, or any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
  • A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for the required experience. Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver patient-centered nursing care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments—physical, psychological, and spiritual—to inform care planning.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans and nursing interventions.
  • Monitor patient progress, administer medications, and evaluate treatment outcomes.
  • Educate patients and families, offering emotional support throughout hospitalization.
  • Lead and supervise LPNs, NAs, and support staff as charge nurse.
