About The Position

The Prevention Specialist provides support to participants in the community, applying public health principles and evidence-based strategies to prevent substance use. Working under the Chief Prevention Officer, the Prevention Specialist helps assess community needs, deliver prevention education and programming, build partnerships with community organizations and coalitions, and document and evaluate program outcomes in support of healthier individuals, families, and communities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public health or a human service–related field; OR Bachelor's degree in another field with documentation of at least two years of supervised substance use prevention–related experience.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret business, professional, technical, or governmental documents.
  • Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, and the public.
  • Perform basic math, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Apply common sense and solve practical problems involving a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
  • General use of personal computers, printers, and copiers.
  • Ability to document activity in the Electronic Health Records system, correspond with others, and use basic office equipment.
  • Microsoft Office applications and other software are required of the position.
  • Valid NC or SC Driver's License

Responsibilities

  • Apply basic public health processes to the work of substance use prevention and adhere to current best practices.
  • Assess community needs and capacities as related to substance use prevention.
  • Assist in developing comprehensive strategic plans based on community needs.
  • Assist in designing and implementing substance use prevention programs, practices, and policies across the six prevention strategies.
  • Assist in evaluating the process, output, outcome, and impact of substance use prevention programs, practices, and policies.
  • Assist in evaluating the satisfaction of participants and partners.
  • Provide information about the nature of drug use, abuse, and addiction and the effects on individuals, families, and communities, as well as information on available programs and services.
  • Facilitate two-way communication aimed at affecting critical life and social skills, using evidence-based principles and programs and a variety of health education methods.
  • Facilitate constructive and healthy activities in pro-social environments based on the interests of the target population.
  • Identify individual and family needs and provide referrals as necessary to appropriate and complementary services.
  • Collaborate with community members, other organizations, and coalitions to help create and sustain community systems and environments that support individuals and families in maintaining healthy lifestyles.
  • Promote community standards, codes, and attitudes that reduce the incidence and prevalence of substance use, including through legislative advocacy, communication campaigns, social norms strategies, and organizational and policy change.
  • Complete all prevention-related documentation and data collection as required.
  • Assist in the preparation of periodic reports according to established protocols.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information consistent with applicable federal, state, county, and agency rules and regulations.
  • Follow policies, procedures, and standards for efficient and effective services.
  • Ensure effective, quality programming in compliance with contracts, regulations, and Anuvia goals and standards.
  • Maintain current competence in evidence-based prevention programs, practices, policies, and drug use trends.
  • Obtain and keep current any certifications that may be required for this position now and in the future.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of agency events.
