About The Position

The Prevention Coordinator will work with Dr. Sam Margherio and Virginia Cooperative Extension on a Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority–funded project to expand school-based substance use prevention strategies for youth across Virginia. This part-time, school-year position offers flexible work supporting schools and communities. The Coordinator will help strengthen partnerships among schools, families, communities, and prevention professionals, contributing to healthier futures for Virginia’s young people.

Requirements

Associate degree or higher in education, psychology, communications, marketing, or a related field.
Reliable transportation; mileage reimbursement is provided.
Strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
Enthusiasm for engaging with community members, creativity and initiative, strong organizational skills, and an appreciation for working independently in a supportive, collaborative environment.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge and experience working with school systems.
Experience coordinating community outreach activities.

Responsibilities

Partner with established Community Advisory Boards to adapt prevention programming for today’s youth and local community needs.
Update an online train-the-trainer toolkit that helps secondary educators use neuroscience education to support substance use prevention.
Collaborate with Virginia Cooperative Extension Coordinators to share prevention strategies with partner schools across Virginia.
Coordinate Brain Day field trips to the Virginia Tech campus, including school communications, scheduling, and event logistics.
