About The Position

This role is responsible for the safe setup and operation of the feeder area of a conventional sheet-fed printing press. The Press Operator ensures that quality products are achieved at a consistent rate of speed in accordance with machine standards and customer specifications. This position requires adherence to the company's core values and operating principles, including being trustworthy, servant-hearted, relational, and resourceful. The role involves assessing production runs, reviewing schedules, preparing materials, operating the press, assisting with quality checks, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining a clean work environment. The Press Operator also plays a role in training new team members and performing routine maintenance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • One to three months of related experience.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to utilize software.
  • Mechanical ability and skills.
  • Ability to read and understand documents, letters, etc., and write legibly in English.
  • Ability to understand and speak clearly, communicate, and understand directions in English.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide both fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to solve equations.
  • Ability to read a tape measure.
  • Understanding of both standard and metric measuring systems.
  • Regular attendance and reporting for work on time.
  • Availability for overtime work if necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating or feeding a large format press.
  • Folding carton industry experience.

Responsibilities

  • Safely set up and operate the feeder area of the conventional sheet-fed printing press.
  • Ensure quality products are achieved at a consistent rate of speed according to machine standards and customer specifications.
  • Assess the status of production runs from the previous shift and review the production schedule for the current shift.
  • Review job ticket instructions to determine customer specifications, machine setup procedures, and supplies needed.
  • Prepare for the next production run by retrieving and transporting the correct substrate and staging it at the feeder section.
  • Prepare all make-ready materials and supplies for the next scheduled job, including inks, printing plates, proofs, and job jackets.
  • Record ink levels at the completion of each production run and clean ink towers.
  • Inspect paperboard for quality and defects, set up the feeder, and make necessary machine adjustments to meet efficiency goals.
  • Load paperboard into the press feeder and monitor feeding throughout the production run.
  • Assist the First Press Operator with performing quality checks before, during, and after production runs.
  • Process samples of the final printed sheet through the verification system to validate content against customer proof.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, diagnose, and correct issues as they occur, using available tools and technology.
  • Train and assist new 2nd Press Operators with job responsibilities, including safety and quality procedures.
  • Perform routine cleaning and scheduled preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain a clean work environment in accordance with Food Safety and 5S programs.
  • Communicate effectively with other team members throughout the shift and at shift change.
  • Collaborate with Quality Technicians/Supervisors to obtain approvals and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Actively seek and adopt new updates and improvements to processes, procedures, and innovations.
  • Develop knowledge and skills to produce product safely, minimizing downtime, and utilizing downtime for assisting with setup, cleanup, or other tasks.
  • Follow all safety-related policies, rules, regulations, technical instructions, and guidelines.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the task at hand.
  • Assist other team members with duties in other areas or departments as requested.
  • In the absence of the First Press Operator, lead a crew to execute the demands of the printing operation efficiently and respond to instructions.
