About The Position

Under the direction of the supervisor, workers perform production, maintenance or janitorial duties as assigned to meet Safety, Quality, Delivery, yield and Cost goals. Each operator is responsible for and has the necessary authority to ensure quality, including stopping production to correct quality non-conformance. The Press Operator is responsible for the safe operation of the press, knowing the status of the operation at any one time, and has decision-making responsibility on all matters concerning normal production operation of the press. This role involves organizing the press crew for startup, checking specific items before startup, coordinating with the table-man for quality, operating the press efficiently, and following all safety rules and regulations. The operator must maintain maximum mental and visual concentration and alertness to ensure safe operation of the Press, and has a minimum degree of responsibility for the safety of others and is responsible for extra high-dollar equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Uses appropriate safety measures
  • Uses appropriate measurement equipment and techniques as trained
  • Records and maintains documentation and data as required
  • Follows applicable work instructions
  • Uses good housekeeping skills to maintain the work area
  • Follows directions and instructions of all supervisory personnel
  • Maintains good relations with co-workers, management and visitors
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Operate the press and direct the press crew in extruding billets into base tube
  • Safe operation of the press
  • Know the status of the operation at any one time
  • Has decision-making responsibility on all matters concerning normal production operation of the press
  • Organize the press crew for startup checking the following items before startup: Container, pumps, heaters, valves, and heat exchanger
  • Call for Maintenance help or “B” Bay Crane when needed
  • Direct and assign personnel as needed
  • Stay at control panel at all times except for lunch and breaks
  • Make proper press shutdown at the end of the shift
  • Keep control panel area clean and orderly
  • Coordinate with table-man to ensure proper quality of extrusion, maintain proper fluid levels and heat ranges for optimum quality of base tube
  • Operate press in an efficient manner to ensure minimum cycle time and maximum production
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations
  • Report production and downtime information on the daily log
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Converting Mill Supervisor
  • Follow specified startup and shutdown procedures
