About The Position

American Conservation Experience (ACE), in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking a Preservation Maintenance Member to assist with the preservation and maintenance of historic structures and landscapes at the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park (NHP) in Plains, GA. This is a 52-week minimum commitment position. The park preserves sites associated with James Earl Carter, Jr., including his residence, boyhood farm, school, and campaign headquarters. The role involves maintaining and preserving park historic buildings and landscapes in accordance with NPS guidelines, assisting NPS staff, performing painting and basic carpentry, and supporting grounds, custodial, and historic structure repairs. The position is primarily outdoors and requires working in various weather conditions and with potential environmental hazards. It is intended to facilitate professional development and exposure to land management agencies.

Requirements

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States. ACE does not provide sponsorship for employment visas.
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Members must be 21+ to drive due to ACE's insurance and liability requirements.
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations, and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.
  • Member may not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
  • Must be between the ages of 16 and 30 (or up to 35 for veterans) to meet Public Land Corps (PLC) eligibility requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Hold or be pursuing a minimum of a high school diploma and/or have relevant experience in areas such as biology, gardening, landscaping, and construction.
  • Laborer or maintenance experience.
  • Ability to multitask and shift schedule and priorities to meet changing conditions.
  • Comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights.
  • A willingness to work hard and get dirty.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and preserve all park historic buildings and landscapes in accordance with NPS historical guidelines and Historic Structures Reports.
  • Assist NPS Staff in the preservation and maintenance of park structures and assets, as well as cultural and historical landscapes.
  • Perform cleaning and inspecting of structures and landscapes.
  • Perform painting duties, basic carpentry duties, and general maintenance practices under NPS supervision.
  • Work alongside NPS Maintainers and Gardeners to preserve all park historical structure assets.
  • Work with the facilities team to provide support of park maintenance operations, ensuring visitor and administrative areas are clean and safe.
  • Provide support for grounds, custodial, and historic structure repairs, including daily cleaning of buildings and restrooms, assisting with structure repairs, gardening with hand tools, and maintaining a clean landscape.
