About The Position

The Preschool Special Education Paraprofessional supports the instructional program and daily classroom activities for young children (ages 3–5) receiving special education services. Under the direction of a certified special education teacher, this role provides direct instructional, behavioral, and developmental support to students with a wide range of abilities. The paraprofessional works to create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment that promotes early learning, independence, social-emotional development, and school readiness.

Requirements

  • Experience working with young children, preferably in early childhood or special education settings.
  • Basic understanding of child development and early learning principles.
  • Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively under the supervision of certified staff.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, and a supportive demeanor when working with young children with varying needs.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the special education teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including instructional, behavioral, and developmental goals.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students with diverse learning needs, including developmental delays, autism spectrum disorder, and other disabilities.
  • Support the delivery of preschool curriculum focused on early literacy, numeracy, communication, motor development, and social-emotional skills.
  • Reinforce learning activities, model appropriate behaviors, and provide guided practice during structured and unstructured times (e.g., centers, playtime, transitions).
  • Assist students with daily living skills such as toileting, feeding, dressing, and hygiene, as needed.
  • Implement behavior intervention strategies and positive behavior supports as directed by the teacher or support team.
  • Help maintain a structured and predictable classroom environment, including preparing materials, organizing learning spaces, and supporting transitions.
  • Observe and document student behavior, progress, and responses to interventions, and report data to the supervising teacher.
  • Facilitate peer interactions and social skill development during classroom and playground activities.
  • Support inclusion by assisting students in participating in general education or integrated settings when applicable.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times, including close supervision during classroom, playground, and arrival/dismissal times.
  • Assist with classroom management and help redirect behavior using developmentally appropriate techniques.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with teachers, therapists, and families, as appropriate and directed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student information in compliance with FERPA and district policies.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
