About The Position

The Department of Natural Resources’ South Puget Sound Region is looking for a Presales Forester who will provide region expertise for the State Lands timber sales program. This exciting role is an essential part of our region land management team that works towards providing a variety of environmental, economic, and social benefits for local communities. The position will be the primary point of contact for the district staff regarding the presales process, procedures, and timber sale packet standards. This position coordinates with region support staff, other programs, and division staff to meet timber sale deliverables and provide guidance for the region timber sales program. The position will be a great fit if you enjoy making a tangible contribution to a program, providing guidance to others within the larger team of state lands, and collaborating with local staff to accomplish high-quality projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or a closely related Natural Resource field AND at least two (2) years of professional experience in a natural resource position; OR, a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Two (2) years of relevant professional experience in timber sales.
  • Experience utilizing computer applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel, and Adobe, in a professional environment.
  • Experience with editing maps in GIS ArcPro.
  • Competency in using SharePoint or other web-based programs.
  • Knowledge of Forest Practices and SEPA policies and processes.
  • Accustomed to reading, writing, and interpreting contract language.
  • Facilitation and collaboration skills.
  • Knowledge of logging and forest road construction practices.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Accustomed to working independently and as part of a team to develop and achieve Department and program deliverables.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to effectively provide clear written and verbal direction to a diverse audience (both internal and external) and resolve conflicts.

  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations, and public records retention and requests are followed.
  • A current, valid driver’s license and two years of driving experience.
  • DNR requires state drivers to possess a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted (for example, Occupational/Restricted Driver Licenses or requiring ignition interlock devices).
  • This position requires driving as an essential function.

  • Knowledge of State trust lands policies and procedures under the Department’s HCP and Policy for Sustainable Forests.
  • Understanding of current forest management objectives & timber management planning.
  • Experience in timber sales contract preparation and administration.
  • Experience with timber marketing and financial appraisals.
  • Experience in applying principles and practices of the forestry profession (i.e., fundamentals of silviculture, markets and forest economics, cruising methods, sale layout, logging methods, forest engineering, recreation and multiple use, forest inventory, water quality, fisheries management, and watershed management).
  • Presentation and strong public speaking skills.
  • Supervisory experience, including knowledge of employment rules and regulations as they apply to permanent DNR employees.
  • Accustomed to navigating using maps, aerial photos or orthophotos, and a compass or GPS.
  • Experience in using basic forestry field instruments, including a clinometer, a compass, a GPS, a radio, and a laser rangefinder.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the South Puget Sound region expert for the State Lands timber sales program regarding presales process, procedures, and standards.
  • Schedules, coordinates, and guides field foresters in preparing timber sale packets and in understanding applicable policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Reviews all direct, region, and board timber sale packets.
  • Coordinates with specialists, district staff, divisions, and other program staff to resolve issues or conflicts with procedures.
  • Processes timber sale SEPAs, FPAs, and provides Products Sales and Leasing Division information for BNR review and advertisement.
  • Calculates timber sale trusts for revenue distribution.
  • Supervises and provides direction to two Contract Specialists to ensure work is performed within agency standards and timber sale timelines are met.
  • Assists with conducting timber sale auctions for the region.
