About The Position

The Prep Cook position in the Food and Nutrition Department at Advocate Sherman Hospital is a full-time role responsible for preparing cold items and light bakery for patients, the cafe, and catering. The role involves following standardized recipes, ensuring food safety standards, adhering to production schedules, and maintaining departmental safety and sanitation guidelines. The position requires active participation in problem-solving, clear communication, sound decision-making with minimal supervision, and attendance at required meetings and training sessions. Additional duties may be assigned based on daily needs, such as trayline, dishroom, or cafe support.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • 1 year of food service experience.
  • Good verbal skills.
  • Ability to read & follow a recipe.
  • Basic computer and math skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares all cold items and light bakery accurately for patients, cafe, and catering.
  • Follows standardized recipes to ensure good quality and adequate quantities for all meal programs.
  • Notifies appropriate individual regarding any possible deviations in cold production compliances and processes. Active participant in offering possible solutions. Documents appropriately.
  • Adheres to all departments food safety standards and processes. Documents and takes action when standards (ie temperatures, labeling, food rotation) are not met.
  • Adheres to all cold food production standards (ie par sheets, food waste). Documents and takes action when standards are not met.
  • Adheres to all department cold productions standards related to time schedules (ie food ready on time, proper cooling, preparation times,).
  • Adheres to department safety, sanitation, service/communications standards.
  • Practices safety and sanitation that meet department standards.
  • Uses correct body mechanics in the performance of duties.
  • Utilizes all chemicals according to the department and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Practices a "clean as you go" approach in day-to-day task assignments.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and clarity in both verbal and written communications.
  • Demonstrates sound decision making and takes responsibility for decision making.
  • Requires minimal supervision.
  • Attends meetings, inservices, and training sessions.
  • Completes CBT, flu shot and other hospital requirements.
  • Follows hospital and department dress code standards.
  • Performs additional or other duties as assigned based on daily needs of the department (trayline, dishroom, cafe).
