About The Position

The Child Help Initiative and the E’pit Nuji Ilmuet Programs of the Native Council of Nova Scotia are long-term programs which are designed to create, through community support, programs and partnerships a brighter future for Indigenous children aged 0 to 6 years. Under the direction of and reporting to the Chief Programs Officer, the CHIP/Prenatal Coordinator is responsible for providing oversight and guidance to program staff of the CHIP and Prenatal programs of the NCNS, and to ensure that all program activities meet the needs and requirements of Indigenous families participating in the service. In addition, the CHIP/Prenatal Coordinator will be responsible for the management of all CHIP and Prenatal staff, program administration, budget, stakeholder management and to request and secure funding.

Requirements

Minimum of an undergraduate degree in Social Work/Child and Youth/Psychology or other relevant Bachelor’s degree; OR a Human Services diploma with 3+ years of relevant experience in the Social Services field.
A minimum of two years working with the Mi’kmaw/Indigenous population and/or knowledge and understanding of Mi’kmaw/Indigenous culture, values, and practices; lived experience will be considered an asset.
Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
Understanding of the Mi’kmaw/Indigenous culture, communities, and organizations.
Knowledge of the rural, urban, off-reserve Indigenous social and economical situation in Nova Scotia, Indigenous service delivery organizations, and applicable government programming, etc.
Ability to professional represent the NCNS with clients, at meetings and other gatherings.
Demonstrated strong initiative, motivation, conscientiousness and dedication.
Ability to work unsupervised with a high level of productivity with the ability to seek and take direction.
Ability to be adaptable, flexible, and manage multiple priorities to ensure clients are well served and relationships are developed and maintained.
Ability to think analytically and critically while problem solving to identify specific needs and potential solutions.
Ability to manage time and various activities effectively and efficiently while providing quality customer service.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, facilitation, presentation and the use of various communication mediums (telephone, office etiquette, meetings, etc.)
Ability to develop relationships, which includes strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, in addition to advocacy, collaboration, conflict resolution, negotiation, and active listening.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Ability to think strategically and able to look at the larger picture.
Time in the office in front of a computer is required, in addition to experience using Microsoft Suite products.
Travel within Nova Scotia is required.
Occasional requirement to work outside normal working hours due to the programming demands.
Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
Clear criminal record (including vulnerable sector screening), and child abuse registry is required.

Nice To Haves

A combination of education, training, and experience will be considered for this position.
Some familiarity with the Mi’kmaw language (an asset) or willingness to learn Mi’kmaw greetings.
If all qualifications are equal, preference will be given to person of Aboriginal/Indigenous ancestry in accordance to the Aboriginal Employment Preference Policy of the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Responsibilities

Supervise, plan, and oversee the operations and fiscal requirements, including budgets, of the Child Help Initiative Program and E’pit Nuji Ilmuet Program (Prenatal) within funding requirements and parameters.
Coordinate and oversee the work and priorities of a total of 2 to 3 staff (CHIP and Prenatal Facilitators).
Establish performance and operational expectations for the staff and the program.
Assist with and manage complex cases, when required.
Recommend policies, procedures, and work practices that enable and encourage optimal performance and health and safety of staff.
Process travel claims, track and process accounts, and manage incoming payments in compliance with NCNS financial policies and procedures.
Work collaboratively with other NCNS management and staff on initiatives and the sharing of information, as required.
Coach and develop staff, management of performance and set appropriate expectations.
Work with staff to develop and implement annual work plans, self-care and professional development plans.
Development of own self-care and fiscal work plan.
Work with local, provincial, or federal stakeholders to ensure that the CHIP and Prenatal programs are meeting the needs and requirements of Indigenous families.
Address any gaps or challenges with respective stakeholders.
Evaluate program outcomes and prepare reports to measure the impact and success of the NCNS Child Help Initiative Program and the NCNS E’pit Nuji Ilmuet Program.
Develop and submit quarterly and annual reports summarizing all activities and statistics of the programs.
Maintain up-to-date files and ensure adherence to confidentiality agreements.
Continuously seek education and training to remain culturally responsive and sensitive to the needs of clients.
Perform any other related duties as required to support the operational and/or program needs of the CHIP and Prenatal programs, as requested by the Chief Programs Officer.
Perform any other assigned duties as assigned by the NCNS Executive and/or Management to support the organization as a whole.
