About The Position

RRD is seeking a Prelim/Prepress Operator 3 to join their team. This role involves reviewing and manipulating electronic files for print production, ensuring accuracy and completeness before the plate-making process. The operator will determine page layouts, identify and resolve issues with client files, and prepare proofs. This position also includes operating CTP plate-making equipment and performing quality checks on finished plates. As a department lead, this role requires leadership skills, the ability to assist other employees, and potentially interact with customers on conference calls to clarify submission methods and project requirements.

Requirements

  • Ability to work with various graphic design and layout software applications on Mac and PC.
  • Thorough understanding of digital file formats (pdf, tiff, eps) from different operating systems (Mac and PC).
  • Advanced color management skills.
  • Ability to work with different digital file formats.
  • Ability to output digital files to various output devices.
  • Ability to learn and use new graphics software on an ongoing basis.
  • Understanding of the offset printing process and color interactions.
  • Mechanical skills using small hand tools for minor repairs and maintenance on a flatbed scanner, image setter, and automated film processing equipment.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Ability to answer questions or take action to find answers for other employees related to pre-press operations.
  • Ability to join conference calls to help clarify proper methods of submitting art, variable files for programming etc. for both internal and external interested parties.
  • Ability to answer customer questions respectfully and edify them to meet project requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with imposition software (Mac).
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite software (PC).

Responsibilities

  • Review electronic files received from clients for thoroughness and completeness before the plate making process.
  • Use electronic page layout software to manipulate print job formats to paper dimensions.
  • Determine page layout, accounting for folds, trims, bleeds, and gripper, and add crop marks and color bars.
  • Identify missing or problematic components and communicate them to Customer Service, customers, and production personnel.
  • Collaborate with Customer Service, customers, and production personnel to resolve job-related issues.
  • Load customer-supplied electronic files for output during the manufacturing process.
  • Prepare color proofs for customer review.
  • Impose images and operate CTP plate making equipment and bending/tabbing equipment to prepare plates for press.
  • Perform quality checks on finished plates before releasing them to manufacturing.
  • Assist with special projects from Management and cross-train in other areas.
  • Act as the department lead, assisting other employees with questions and taking necessary actions to find answers related to pre-press operations.
  • Participate in conference calls to clarify proper methods of submitting art and variable files for programming.
  • Answer customer questions and educate them respectfully to meet project requirements.
