About The Position

The Pre-Vocational Math Teacher Evening will be primarily responsible for raising the Math levels and preparing students to enter the HVAC training program. The Math Teacher will be serving a class of approximately 20-25 adult students. Students range in age and previous education; English is the second language for some of our students. Students are working towards preparing to enter the HVAC evening program at SCALE. To this end, The Pre-Vocational Math teacher is responsible for teaching a range of Math topics. Experience teaching Math to adult learners is required. It is essential that the Math teacher has had training in and successful experience teaching explicit Math strategies. The teacher will collaborate closely with the Director and Program Administrator to ensure program goals are met. The teacher must collect and submit attendance records, document student progress, and assist with other DESE-related activities.

Requirements

  • Experience teaching Math to adult learners is required.
  • Must have had training in and successful experience teaching explicit Math strategies.
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 3 years ABE classroom teaching experience – at least one complete year teaching adult immigrants
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of learner-centered teaching approaches and effective integrated skills activities
  • MA Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) Clearance
  • Fingerprints

Nice To Haves

  • Masters in Math or Adult Basic Education preferred.
  • Massachusetts Teacher Certification a plus
  • MAPT certification is preferred but not required for this position

Responsibilities

  • Prepare lesson plans and choose appropriate materials, following the ABE Department’s Curriculum Guidelines and MA DESE College and Career Readiness Standards, and submit one lesson plan per month.
  • Meet weekly with the Reading/Writing Teacher to plan, implement and monitor the Para Educator curriculum and provide individualized support to students in the program.
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings, department meetings and appropriate in-service workshops.
  • Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations as required by department policy/procedures.
  • Complete attendance and assessment-related activities as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
  • Work effectively with other teachers, counselor(s), the program administrator and Director on student and program issues.
  • Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans.
  • Integrate digital literacy into instruction, including using Aztec software for additional practice.
