About The Position

The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire an energetic and versatile instructor to perform highly specialized teaching duties at the 0-3 and Early Childhood/pre-school level at the Illinois School for Visually Impaired (ISVI). This position coordinates and participates in student evaluations of children who attend the Early Childhood Program and plans curriculum and prepares lesson plans and other materials. The incumbent will provide Braille instruction and/or produce Braille materials to blind and visually impaired students and support for efforts to instruct Early Intervention providers on visual impairments. Travels in the performance of duties. The Division is looking to hire a detail-oriented Educator with good communication and leadership skills to start the 2026 – 2027 school year.

Requirements

  • Requires a current and valid Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) issued Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsed in Special Education.
  • Requires possession of a current and valid ISBE-issued Professional Educator License with endorsement appropriate for Teacher of Students who are blind or visually impaired prekindergarten through age 22.
  • Requires proficiency in Braille when instructing students who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Must be Illinois School for the Visually Impaired health and safety requirements.
  • Requires ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires ability to travel.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of professional experience working with media used with students who are blind/visually impaired such as Braille and or other technologies.
  • One (1) year of professional experience utilizing current educational trends, techniques, and best practices.
  • One (1) year of professional experience preparing written documentation related to student performance and education.
  • One (1) year of professional experience using the tools, materials and equipment associated with required coursework.
  • One (1) year of professional experience maintaining patience and tolerance while working with students with a wide range of behaviors.
  • One (1) year of professional experience maintaining effective working relationships with staff, assigned students and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a Pre-School Educator teaching students with low vision or blindness for the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI) and serving early intervention ages 0-5.
  • Plans curriculum and prepares lesson plans and other materials.
  • Coordinates and participates in student evaluations of children who attend the Early Childhood Program and/or are served through Early Intervention.
  • Provides support for efforts to instruct Early Intervention providers on visual impairments.
  • Attends training sessions/meetings.
  • Recommends and/or requisitions supplies and equipment for the low vision programs throughout campus.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
