About The Position

We are currently recruiting for a School Educator IV to function as the Lead Teacher at the NC Division of Services for the Blind Career and Training Center This position is located in Raleigh, NC and serves as the Lead Teacher at the NC Division of Services for the Blind Career and Training Center (CTC). The CTC is the sole statewide, residential training facility for adults who are blind, visually impaired or deafblind in North Carolina. Participants as young as 14-years-old also receive services during a one-month summer program. The CTC offers specialized instruction to assist individuals with obtaining pre-vocational skills needed to move towards gainful, competitive and integrated employment as well as learn Independent Living skills. This is a 12-month supervisory and teaching position. The individual in this position needs excellent communication skills and the ability to be flexible to manage a variety of functions, set priorities and adjust to variable priorities. The Lead Teacher must be current on new teaching methods and resource materials in a specified field, providing instruction in specialized skill areas; must keep client and staff information confidential as well as respectfully and appropriately interact with individuals with a variety of disabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or above in Teaching Area with or eligible to receive a license level of one of the following: Bachelor's, Master's, Advanced, Doctorate.
  • Completion of an approved School Administration program at the master’s level or above.
  • Eligibility for, or possession of a North Carolina Principal’s License.
  • Provisional license as an Assistant Principal; Provisional licenses are valid for up to three (3) school years and require active enrollment in a master’s level School Administration program during that period. All program requirements must be completed within the provisional license timeframe.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a collaborative approach within the instructional team as well as with other CTC professionals (management, administrative assistants, rehabilitation counselors, nursing and residential) as well as the overall Division.
  • Provide supervision to 12 instructors including licensed teachers and individuals with certifications from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP). Supervision includes: o Hire new staff o Oversee effective, individualized instruction for the population o Manage time approvals o Coach for improvement and manage disciplinary matters o Monitor teachers’ license/certification o Implement the licensed teacher Professional Development Plans as well as ACVREP-certified staff work plans o Educate and guide instructional staff on applicable policies and procedures. o Review and monitor the content and timely entry of reports in the case management system by all supervisees. o Ensure there is class coverage when there are absences or vacancies.
  • Provide direct instruction and classroom management of an identified instructional area for students who are blind, visually impaired or deafblind. o Conduct initial assessment. o Evaluate student progress. o Maintain appropriate documentation including writing progress reports which are entered into a case management system. o Participate in student staffing.
  • Serve on the Admissions Team and Scheduling Team as needed. Assist with identifying needed background information for teachers to provide effective instruction.
  • Obtain or review quotes for educational supplies and equipment needed by teachers for classroom training.
  • As part of the Center management team, work together to facilitate an effective environment where students’ needs can be met most effectively within available time and resources.
  • This position is on-call one weekend per month and in case of emergencies.
