About The Position

This position involves performing and assuming responsibility for tasks under the direct supervision of a certified teacher or teaching team, with a high degree of independent judgment, releasing the teacher from routine tasks. The aide will assist individual students and small groups as needed, interact with supervisors, teachers, and parents, and adhere to federal and state laws, as well as district policies, procedures, and regulations. The role includes reinforcing instruction, working with at-risk students, assisting with lesson preparation (e.g., cooking, music, poetry), integrating technology, supporting other teachers and the librarian, assisting with testing, and preparing classroom materials and displays. The aide will also incorporate discipline strategies, focus on social skills development, reinforce proper etiquette during meals, and provide orientation to substitute teachers. Attendance at the work site is required. Additional virtual and online duties may be assigned, including assisting in the creation and participation in a virtual classroom environment and being available by phone, email, or video conferencing. Other responsibilities include participating in professional development, following safety procedures, supporting district goals, and maintaining a professional code of ethics.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or higher.
  • Forty-eight (48) hours from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience working with students and parents.
  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain a paraprofessional certificate issued by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).
  • Must obtain a national criminal background check through the SBEC website within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be able to communicate, listen, read, write, and comprehend the English language sufficiently to use it easily and readily in daily communication.
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with district employees, parents, and students.
  • Must be able to assist in the lifting/carrying of students with disabilities in excess of 50 to 175 lbs. depending on age level, pushing/pulling wheelchair/walker, personal hygiene, etc.
  • Must possess ability, skill, patience, and understanding to work with students who have disabilities.
  • Requires some bending, reaching, standing, kneeling, squatting.
  • Must be able to acquire certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Heimlich maneuver, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI).
  • Must be familiar with/able to use Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy (OT/PT) apparatus.
  • Subject to the district's drug and alcohol screening policy and regulation.

Responsibilities

  • Reinforce skills and units of instruction taught by the teacher.
  • Work with targeted at-risk students on a one-to-one basis, with small groups, and the whole class.
  • Assist with preparation of extension lessons such as cooking, music, poetry enrichment.
  • Assist students with integration of technology and educational media into the curriculum.
  • Assist support teachers, technology teacher, and librarian during scheduled times.
  • Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  • Participate in selecting, planning, organizing, and evaluating classroom instructional materials.
  • Assist teacher in preparing classroom displays and using instructional materials.
  • Incorporate discipline strategies and concentrate on social skills development throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom.
  • Reinforce proper etiquette during meals and snacks.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Assist in the creation and actively participate in a virtual classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during regular school business hours to confer with district stakeholders as needed.
  • Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
  • Support district/department goals.
  • Maintain a professional code of ethics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
