About The Position

The Pre-Analytical Assistant I is responsible for general support functions within the Technical Operations Department. The candidate will perform manual functions including sorting, racking, and delivery of specimens to ensure efficient laboratory operations. This role involves understanding specimen types, clinical department requirements, compliance regulations, and maintaining a high level of accuracy and timeliness in all tasks. The assistant will also be involved in problem identification, documentation, and contributing to a team-based environment.

Requirements

  • Minimal data entry skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Understanding of specimen types related to tests ordered.
  • Knowledge of clinical department requirements regarding specimen types and quantity needed for each test, specimen handling, and delivery.
  • Understanding of compliance regulations related to test ordering which may change on a daily basis.
  • Flexibility and a willingness to adapt to change and pursuit of continuous improvement.
  • Commitment to fulfilling internal and external customer requirements in the course of carrying out routine position responsibilities.
  • Willingness to actively contribute to a team-based working environment.
  • Ability and willingness to support the goals of the department with regard to staffing needs on weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime.

  • Ability to maneuver large carts and racks with specimens.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical background preferred, including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory.
  • Previous experience in a production environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with mainframe computers is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform manual functions including sorting, racking, and delivery of specimens.
  • Ensure efficient laboratory operations.
  • Identify problems with specimen types or missing information regarding sorting, racking, centrifuging, delivery, and storage of specimens.
  • Complete all required written documentation such that it is understandable to others, legible, and within the assigned time frame.
  • Report to work on time and follow attendance guidelines to support the department's performance.
  • Learn additional functions within Technical Operations and Specimen Processing to allow timely progression.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work in a production environment.
  • Maintain composure while working under pressure.
  • Adhere to core values, safety, compliance, and work process policies and procedures.
  • Work in a biohazard environment in compliance with all applicable safety requirements.
  • Keep work area neat and clean and comply with 5S workplace standards.
  • Support the goals of the department with regard to staffing needs on weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime.
  • Perform specimen storage, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
