Here’s what the opportunity supported through our TGS Talent Acquisition Team requires: The Practice Architect - AWS Migrations & Modernization is a client-facing consulting and delivery leadership role responsible for shaping and leading application and database migration and modernization engagements on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The architect translates business objectives, application portfolio characteristics, and legacy technology constraints into pragmatic target architectures, migration roadmaps, estimates, and delivery plans, while providing technical assurance from discovery through production cutover and optimization. Engagements may include portfolio assessments, proofs of concept, migration factories, application modernization programs, database transformations, and complex multi-workload initiatives for North American customers. The Practice Architect leads cross-functional delivery teams, performs hands-on architecture and solutioning, manages technical risks and dependencies, and ensures deliverables align with statements of work, security and compliance requirements, cost objectives, and measurable business outcomes. This role may require up to 25% travel. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in AWS cloud services, application modernization, migration patterns, cloud-native development, DevOps, data and database modernization, pre-sales, delivery, and operational excellence. The candidate must be able to use generative and agentic AI responsibly to accelerate application discovery, dependency analysis, documentation, remediation, testing, refactoring, and migration across .NET, Java, and Python application stacks and Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and PostgreSQL databases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, engineering, information systems, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in information technology and/or professional services, with significant responsibility for solution architecture and client delivery.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a Cloud Architect, Application Architect, Migration Architect, or equivalent role.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on AWS experience and at least 3 years of application and/or database migration and modernization experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading end-to-end AWS migration or modernization engagements from discovery and assessment through implementation, cutover, stabilization, and optimization.
  • Ability to develop innovative, executable solutions to complex business and technology problems and to produce architecture diagrams, decision records, migration plans, estimates, and technical delivery artifacts.
  • Strong knowledge of migration and modernization patterns, including rehost, relocate, replatform, repurchase, refactor, retain, and retire strategies.
  • Hands-on experience modernizing legacy enterprise applications through runtime and framework upgrades, code refactoring, decomposition, API enablement, containerization, serverless adoption, or cloud-native redesign.
  • Working depth in at least two application ecosystems among .NET/C#, Java/Spring/Spring Boot, and Python, with the ability to assess codebases, dependencies, build systems, testing approaches, and deployment models.
  • Hands-on experience migrating or modernizing Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and/or PostgreSQL databases, including schema conversion, data validation, performance tuning, high availability, and cutover planning.
  • Knowledge of AWS migration and data movement services such as AWS Migration Hub, AWS Application Migration Service, AWS Database Migration Service, AWS Schema Conversion Tool or equivalent schema-conversion capabilities, AWS DataSync, and native backup/restore methods.
  • Hands-on knowledge of core AWS services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, AWS Lambda, Amazon API Gateway, AWS Step Functions, Amazon EventBridge, Amazon S3, Amazon RDS/Aurora, Amazon DynamoDB, AWS Systems Manager, AWS Identity and Access Management, AWS Secrets Manager, and Amazon CloudWatch.
  • Experience with AWS enterprise foundations, including AWS Organizations, AWS Control Tower, multi-account landing zones, Amazon VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, identity, security, logging, and governance controls.
  • Strong knowledge of microservices, event-driven and serverless architectures, RESTful APIs, containers, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native design principles.
  • Experience with source control and software collaboration platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and artifact repositories.
  • Experience configuring and managing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, AWS CodePipeline, or equivalent platforms.
  • Hands-on scripting and automation skills using Python, Bash, PowerShell, or comparable languages, plus the ability to review and reason about application code.
  • Ability to apply generative AI and coding assistants to accelerate modernization work while maintaining secure development, intellectual property, privacy, quality, and human-approval controls.
  • Knowledge of IP networking, VPNs, DNS, load balancing, firewalls, Linux, Windows, and hybrid connectivity in cloud or virtualized environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, operational excellence, and the ability to challenge technical decisions when architecture standards or best practices are not met.
  • Ability to work across time zones, manage architecture tasks, dependencies, and risks for multiple concurrent engagements, and operate effectively with ambiguity.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present designs and tradeoffs to technical, business, and executive stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel to client locations to deliver professional services, as needed.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate or higher.

  • 10+ years of experience in information technology and/or professional services, including 5+ years of cloud architecture and 5+ years of AWS migration or modernization experience.

  • Experience building reusable modernization accelerators, migration factories, automated assessment pipelines, or large-scale code and database transformation capabilities.
  • Advanced experience modernizing databases to Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB, or other fit-for-purpose AWS data services.
  • Prior success automating production environments with Ansible, Chef, Puppet, Salt, or cloud-native equivalents.
  • Expertise in DevOps, platform engineering, observability, security automation, infrastructure as code, and FinOps practices for modernized workloads.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve ambitious goals in a highly innovative, fast-paced consulting environment and to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

  • For new engagements, lead discovery and transition activities; establish the technical operating model, governance, metrics, risks, assumptions, issues, and dependencies; and support delivery of defined statements of work.
  • Assess application and database portfolios, define disposition strategies and migration waves, and create executable roadmaps covering target-state architecture, sequencing, testing, cutover, rollback, resilience, disaster recovery, security, and cost optimization.
  • Design secure, scalable, resilient, and cost-effective AWS solutions. Select fit-for-purpose patterns across rehosting, replatforming, refactoring, containers, serverless, managed services, APIs, event-driven architecture, and microservices while accounting for landing zones, networking, identity, observability, and operational support.
  • Lead modernization of monolithic and legacy applications, including framework and runtime upgrades, decomposition, API enablement, containerization, serverless adoption, and cloud-native redesign across .NET/C#, Java and Spring ecosystems, and Python frameworks.
  • Architect and guide database migrations and conversions involving Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and PostgreSQL, including schema and code assessment, data movement, validation, performance testing, high availability, disaster recovery, and production cutover to AWS managed database services.
  • Apply generative and agentic AI to accelerate code and dependency analysis, architecture documentation, framework upgrades, schema conversion, test generation, defect remediation, refactoring, and delivery automation. Establish appropriate human review, security, privacy, and governance controls for AI-assisted work.
  • Create the technical architecture for complex cloud systems and lead the implementation team. Perform hands-on implementation and proof-of-concept work, delegate tasks, conduct design and code reviews, mentor team members, and maintain a shared vision of engagement goals.
  • Maintain strong relationships with technical and business stakeholders, present recommendations to executive and engineering audiences, address issues as they arise, and identify opportunities for additional client value.
  • Support Solution Architects and Solution Executives with technical discovery, solution options, methodology recommendations, estimates, assumptions, risks, proposal content, and statements of work.
  • Contribute to the design and improvement of migration and modernization offerings; create reusable reference architectures, accelerators, methods, delivery tools, and practice artifacts; and evaluate emerging AWS and AI capabilities to keep the practice current and competitive.
  • Assist with interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and mentoring project team members during engagement startup and delivery.
